I just copped an old reel 2 reel thinking on putting all my beats on it and call it the day :yeshrug:

I've not invested much into this, practically all my beats done on various ipad apps etc. I feel you on the giving it up though, I got so much shyt going on that with no return on all the hours I put in to the music, I just can't justify the time

if you're thing ain't selling, these can be the reasons:
  • people don't know you're selling your thing
    • learn your market
    • learn how to effectively/efficiently market and promote your product.
    • follow the AIDA model for marketing:
      • Attention - (Awareness): attract the attention of the customer.
      • Interest - raise customer interest by focusing on and demonstrating advantages and benefits (instead of focusing on features, as in traditional advertising).
      • Desire - convince customers that they want and desire the product or service and that it will satisfy their needs.
      • Action - lead customers towards taking action and/or purchasing.
  • you're selling the wrong thing
    • you're selling boom-bap and the people want trap, ratchet or club joints
    • understand music is a business and there are trends involved
  • you're thing ain't good enough
    • you've followed the above two principles, but still ain't hitting? maybe you need to improve your product.
    • learn/study song structure, basic music theory, how to manipulate synths for better sounds etc.

Thanks Aje but I would like to see people getting paid for their craft that would be nice.

I hear you, fam, but be mindful there are tens-of-thousands of kids with pirated versions of FL Studio. A lot of these dudes got skills, too. How does one expect to differentiate themselves in such a flooded market? People aren't just going to go door-to-door asking if you make hot beats. You have to separate yourself from the herd. There has to be a concerted effort into selling and marketing one's product. Simply uploading your tracks on SoundCloud just won't cut it.

My luck is on cashing out with the hipsters here in NYC (dare I say it).

I make albums...but I focus on live performances too and DJ sets. Gotta have both unless you just a straight producer.

Aje is right. No one is going to come to you and ask you if they can purchase beats no matter how nice they are. People say the market is saturated and that is true there are a lot of producers/ or beat makers in many cases. So its all about why should I buy from you. Most buying is all based on marketing and relationships. You have to be willing to market your beats as if your life depended on it. Have the mindset of "If I don't work to market these beats today, I might not eat tomorrow." At the end of the day the whole industry operates that way. There are producers counting on getting work so they are all fighting for that next placement. The thing is a lot of producers don't have that mentality and so they stick to saying "nobody buys beats" or it's "impossible to sell them."

It's all about changing your mindset in order to be successful
