Trap beats are absolutely dominant in the genre of hip-hop right now. Is there a modern sound that isn't trap? If so, how do you achieve this?

I want to sometimes create beats that won't make people think of the 90's, but I don't want them to always be trap beats, as they are highly over-saturated in hip-hop right now.

theres tons of hip hop/r&B/rap that aint trap you just gotta listen to what you like and create that style. listen to you favorite songs and producers, listen to your favorite sounds.

i love boom bap, jazz, and although ive never attempted it i really like lo-fi. my favorite producers range from a couple that sample to a couple who may sample but also make tons of original beats.

Don't be a follower, be an innovator... Have confidence in yourself and study the greats in music not just hip hop. Once you start making music to appeal to peoples immediate taste or what poppin the the clubs or radio, your already 10 steps behind. Make what makes you feel good inside and ride with it. Good music is timeless.

How would you go about studying the greats?

You have to ask yourself what is the definition of Modern. The best way to achieve this though, is to listen to current artists that don't use heavy trap production, and study the sound from the drums to the melody line. You also have to figure out what is trap really? I mean even Christian Hip-Hop uses quote unquote trap sound now. it's definitely everywhere. However there are producers that don't rely on the trap sound Khrysis being one of them. Another great producer is S1, his catalog is diverse.

have to be more specific I have a chance the rapper/kanye beat that is not trap and more jazzy. you need to either sample or learn how to play live instruments or find a vst/sample than replicatie good live instruments
