What do I need to make sample based production? From what I understand, all I need is records and a sampler/ drum machine. Do I need software or a specific computer? What about avoiding getting caught sampling? Is there a list of records that are free or a date that serves as a threshold or something. Walk me through this. Should I just start on frooty loops demo?

don't worry about sampling. you could sample Michael Jackson, Led Zeppelin, and The Beatles on the same beat...the publisher generally doesn't care until you start making a profit off of the product. And, for the most part, it's the record company's responsibility to clear the samples prior to the release.

Bottom line: if you're making beats for the first time, go ahead and sample whatever you like. Until there's a reasonable amount of money changing hands, no one's going to give a sh*t.

Your going to learn yourself what you do and don't like.

Some people like MPCS, some like maschine, some only like keyboards, hell theres even successful producers who only use a mouse and fruity loops. Just start with whatever you can get your hands on, for cheap/free and go from there. See if it even interest you that much. You can download songs off the internet and import them to something like audacity and chop them in there, or fruity loops.

For example, I've never touched fruity loops, never was my thing. Im more of a hardware guy. Ive had tons of MPCs, I had a mk1 maschine, couple keyboards ect. Now I have my record player, midi keyboard/synth, audio interface, maschine studio, KRKs and a computer for the most part.

it really depends on you and what stands out more to you

when it comes to hip hop most of us see mpc's and keyborads but as you learn more you start to gravitate to stuff that catches your eye

not to long ago i actually thought i needed one of akai's mpc's to make beats cause thats all i saw but only had access to software for years but didnt like it.

you dont need all of them things you listed to make beats, its all on you at the end of the day, i got a maschine and use fruity loops, do i want some keys? yeah sure, i dont need it but i want it cause it stands out to me.

i dont know what kind of budget you're on but dont waste money on stuff you're not sure with, you can make sample based music with just software and any normal type of computer, you might need a decent soundcard and of course monitors, if you have a record player you can import the sounds into your digital work station (DAW) and make beats like that.

drum machine, only buy it if you think you need it.

Cant go wrong with a maschine mikro, a good laptop, and a midi keyboard. a audio interface (like komplete) also will help.

I actually started with a motif and was able to do anything I wanted after about five months. You will find a way.

But if it aint in you, it aint in you.

@dontspeakmuch , just curious. Why do you wanna make beats? Who are you top 3 producers of all time? What are your favorite beats out at the moment? What is your budget?... We can give you a more narrowed answer once you answer those questions.

download a copy of fruity loops or something and learn the basics of producing first of all, after awhile when you get used to it you can import the audio of things you want to sample

it's so easy to do these days, you don't need expensive hardware

and you can still achieve the old school 90's feel (if that's what you are going for) from something as basic as fruity loops, then as you progress you may want to move to a DAW like logic or ableton, but many big names still use fruity loops (fl studios)

First thing I always tell new producers is to start getting used to tempo. It seems easy but really learning tempo is so important. I even suggest counting tempos to any song that comes on the radio.

As far as samples start learning timestretching. Even if you got a dope sample if you can't stretch it to tempo right it's useless
