The scope of their contributions to science in terms of R&D is irrelevant to me. The public needs to be able to understand why science is important and worthy of pursuit, and so there need to be people in the science world who can make it accessible to them and serve as middlemen and publicists for science. All the people you've listed are important for that reason. In addition, they are all big movers and shakers in the science world in other ways, and have a lot of institutional power that helps keep the gears turning on various projects and initiatives. These are all worthy and major contributions to science itself.

Considering how anti-science some politicians are and how ignorant the general public is about it, it's sorely needed. After all, as depressing as it is, only about 40% of the US population believes in evolution, for example.
