I personally believe the internet and myspace ruined rap. It made it seem to easy and accessible to become a rapper and letting others hear wth ease

the younge kids started flocking to trash music they heard on myspace

hip hop CHANGED

think about all the rappers that DEBUTED in 2005... (even the big name rappers that dropped their debut in 05.. still relevant today)

think about how they comapre to the previous stars of hip-hop

when you do this... you will see

that the answer

is

extremly simple

rap is slowly becoming the WWF. the fans arent picking who is going to be hot. its kind of forced on us like champions are forced on us now

the golden era of rap and up to about 2004 is equivelent to the attitude era of wrestling. it was all around great pretty much everything you could ask for the rosters were deep.

now we are seeing people who are okay rappers/wrestlers/entertainers. and you still ahve some greats still around and a few new guys who can keep up but they still dont have that it factor but the roster is far far far away from what it was before.
weak analogy because wrestling has always been fake as fukk but you're trying to say Hip Hop was more "real" or whatever back in the day

im not talking about more real but im talking about the talent disciplines meaning everything instead of the gimmick meaning more

It's more of what's allowed in the mainstream. Even back in 04/5 when Rap was started on a downhill spiral Game had a song like Dreams on the radio, Ye had Jesus Walks etc.

Now EVERYTHING in mainstream is party, get drunk music. Overall though I still think rap is better than it was 6-7 years ago

people were unable to advance in skill without becoming boring in the process. See backpack rappers

I can see the value in this argument, but if Jay, BIG and Nas were able to progress from a skills stanpoint and still reach the masses, shouldn't it be possible for rappers today to do the same?

I actually see Jay Electronica as a step forward in terms of progression, I think if he would put the music out there he would be the biggest thing in rap BY FAR!

It just seems like rap has taken a step back. Respect to the young dudes gettin their money, but most can't rap for shyt!

How many more of these threads will be made? :snoop:

But to answer your question I would say don't let the mainstream fool you. There are dope rappers out there. You just gotta dig a little deeper. There are skilled MCs out there droppin' heat. (Skyzoo, Kendrick, SchoolBoy Q and so on).

I could agree with the WWF allusion though.

Let me breakdown what I'm saying...

From the early days of rap, I'm talking Afrika Bambaataa, Sugarhill Gang etc. There was a definite skill in rapping. And as rap progressed it seemed that the level of skill progressed with it. KRS One, Big Daddy Kane, Kool Moe Dee, LL Cool J, Rakim took rap to a level above and beyond the originators from a skill perspective. Then in the "Golden Era" it seems like it was dope MC after dope MC in hip hop. The progression continued with Jay, BIG, Nas, Face, AZ, Wu Tang, Big Pun, Big L etc(so many more I could name, but you get the point). And these are all rappers that were popular, they weren't underground names.

What happened to the progression in terms of skill? Save a couple of names, rap today is just words that rhyme and sometimes they don't even do that.

Am I completely wrong here? Has Wayne progressed past Jay? Has Ross progressed past BIG? I'm really not trying to pick on any rappers in particular, I seriously just don't see any progression in terms of skill.

BTW, I thought Drake was on his way to being there but he has slacked WAY off from the form he had as mixtape Drake.

And feel free to name some rappers you think have made that jump in terms of progression.
:merchant: This is the most short sighted argument I have seen in a minute.

The only way this shyt could even begin to be a relevant discussion if A MAJORITY of the rappers from preceding time frame were a step up from the last time frame.

:wtf:
