When I joined the UNIA in Atlanta, the president showed me a list of all the organizations around the US that he had heard of. They were in the thousands. The problem is because they're grass roots, they get very little recognition (meaning unless you're involved in community work you'll never hear of them or know of their impact). Also most the groups don't work with each other to organize themselves to move collectively (something I'm personally planning to work on with the organization I'm a member of).
