Have done nothing but shyt on Jokic over the last 4-5 years, who's essentially been the antithesis to what you believe the league has devolved into.

Y'all swear y'all hate how the NBA has turned into a glorified 3-pt contest, where nobody posts up, nobody shoots from the midrange and players are soft, but Jokic posts up, shoots from the midrange and is tough (all on an historic level), and yet the only type of energy you have for him is downplaying his game and/or achievements.

Here's a generational player embodying all these elements that y'all swear y'all want back in the game, but y'all have still found a way to turn y'all noses up at him. Nobody is saying y'all needed to praise the ground he walks on, but the only time y'all ever speak about him, it's to push some other type of agenda against him.

What is it y'all really want from the game? Do y'all even know? Do y'all even want to know? Or do y'all just want to keep burning some effigy about today's game for the sake of?

who still hates on Jokic? this was a good thread to make like 3 years ago lol

Since Jokic won that ring, he has received very little hate. PPl were just annoyed that he kept winning mvp and not winnin chips.

This thread was made just last postseason - https://www.thecoli.com/threads/nik...sed-as-rik-smits-with-a-horse-fetish.1031626/

It was pretty much the most active thread about him since the MVP saga, so yes, cats still hate him, but what's more to the point is, the majority of the discussion around him over the aforementioned period has been based on hate and not praise.

What I'm contesting here is, he is a complete aberration to what cats on this board claim they hate about the league, so theoretically, they should be on his side, should they not? He should be their savior, should he not? They should be talking about how the league would be better off with more players like him, should they not? They should be talking about how he's a worthy face of the league, should they not? They should be talking about him restoring the feeling, should they not?

Here's a player whom has all these traits they want back in the game, but they've done everything over the last 4-5 years to shyt on him.

Since you believe there's nothing to be annoyed about anymore, how come none of those same cats are talking about how he stands out in a crowd of 3-pt shooters?

I, for one, welcome our new space overlords.
Jokic's great of course.

But I think people mostly miss seeing the hunger and drive within the league. Top players wanting to play everygame. Great athletism, tough defense, overall high competetivess of the regular season. A flabby looking dude doesn't really inspire confidence.

Even Jokic himself is very lazy on defense except for grabbing rebounds.
We are tired of Half-assed shot contests with one hand. Most of the time you have defenders just assuming the shooter will make the shot. It's not an all star game.

It's just so damn lazy. You can stay above . 500 and sneak into the playoffs via the play-in. This means you can start watching the NBA in late February and not moss anything important.

I really believe there are too many games. You lose and think 'meh... we'll get the next one'. A four game road trip and it's 'meh... If we can win one game. We'll win more at home'. It it was 48 games regular season, 24 at home 24 away there would be less room for error but less money unfortunately.

Nah they cracked the game. Less effort for more points.

People been defending against 3s in the exact same way. These half-assed 3s is why the scoring been up, not half-assed defense because pull up j's, getting to the paint and shyt is still just as hard. People like Ja Morant, Zion and them keep on getting banged up getting to the rim. Wemby doesn't even try. Giannis had to gain mad weight.

It's almost as if kickers started kicking 80 yard field goals like nothing, can't blame the athleticism, defense or anything else for that.

But most of these "embarssing" compilations seem to come from garbage time where it basically is the equivalent of throwing a hail mary. Most games I see are quite diverse and teams differ in their strategies

Defense over the last 5-10 years is as effective as it's ever been.

Not only do players have to defend infinitely more space now, but actually contesting shots over the aforementioned period is at an all-time high. Showing effort, defending all types of actions and communicating on defense is at an all-time high too. If you go back to the 80s/90s, if a player went around a screen, you'll see not only is there absolutely no communication between teammates on how to defend it, but there's no purpose to either going under or over the screen. It's almost like a foreign concept to them.

Fundamentally, defense has come a long way since shyt like this -

If you wanna talk about half-assed shot contests, that clip is full of them. If a team defended like that today, they'd have 200 put on them.

I don't wanna turn this thread into a discussion about his defense, but this is a tired narrative that needs to die. He's not lazy on defense, he's actually one of the more active big men on that end, he just has certain limitations and he can't get into foul trouble because of how much his team relies on him, but that doesn't stop him from still being an effective defender. He's led all centers in nearly every season over the last half a decade in steals/deflections; he's a brickwall in the post; he inhales any rebound in his vicinity. He puts his BBIQ to good use at that end of the floor.

Not too dissimilar to Marc Gasol, who had the same athletic limitations but used his smarts and size to be one of the best defenders in the game.

If you watched his recent game against GS, you would've seen him constantly blowing up the Steph PnR, leading to him having 5 steals (even having the game-winning block).

The NBA has always been like that. You've never missed anything important (in that context) during an 82-game regular season.

What are your criticisms of Jokic as a player?

He's obviously talented but I consume an inordinate amount of basketball media and I find the non-stop fawning over him really annoying. Given that majority of bball media is cacs the non-stop praise (to be fair Nekias Duncan also bigs him up) is tiresome and feels racially charged. But maybe that's unavoidable when a Serbian horsefukker is the best player in the league?

I find myself annoyed in a way that I wasn't when they talked about Tim Duncan similarly. I mean he looks fat and slow and has super Saiyan Arnie Duncan game.

Ultimately, I'm a hater.

Because we dont care about Jokic:mjpls:
I was wondering if someone was going to come in here and be honest.

Right, so it's less about the style of play y'all have a problem with and more about the players, themselves, and what they represent. Y'all issue is that the NBA has become global to the point where these foreign players have taken over and it's no longer an American game, is that suffice to say? Y'all don't care if Jokic posts up, or shoots midrange shots or is tough, because he's just a fat Euro and it has no meaning to y'all?

If we can establish that, then at least we can stop the complaints about 3s and any other red herring, and talk about how folks don't like the NBA because it's become unAmerican.
What would you change, then.
Does anything need to be changed?

I don't know.

I don't think this era is any different to any other - it's modeled on current trends and the progression of the game. I mean, it's ad nauseam at this point where it's got to be stated that every era had its detractors. The 90s was even shytted on at the time (even by the players, themselves). Which is why I don't find all these complaints about today's game surprising, I just find it strange that cats act like other eras weren't criticized/hated too.

My main criticism of him is he's too unselfish, at times, but that's the gift and the curse of having a pass-first mentality.

Besides that, there really isn't a whole lot to criticize him over. At least, in my opinion.
He's obviously talented but I consume an inordinate amount of basketball media and I find the non-stop fawning over him really annoying. Given that majority of bball media is cacs the non-stop praise (to be fair Nekias Duncan also bigs him up) is tiresome and feels racially charged. I don't know how much of it is racially-charged.

White Americans don't identify with him in any capacity besides his lack of melanin. He had absolutely no fanfare coming into the league because he was an unknown quantity from a league that 99% of NBA fans have never even heard of. It's not like he came into the league with the sort of fandom that Caitlin Clark had, where an overwhelming amount of it is racially-charged because of how White America identifies with her.

Jokic was just a fat dude from Europe. Besides hardcore hoop fans, nobody really took notice of him until around 2018, after he'd already been in the league for two seasons.

The waters get murky when talking about how much of the discourse around his game is based upon him being white, because I don't know if there's really any self-recognition that white boys in this country have with what he represents. He barely speaks, he doesn't endorse anything (besides his racehorses), he doesn't align himself with anything to do with America and its patriotism. He couldn't wait to get the fukk out of the country the moment he won a title to get back to his homeland.

Perhaps on some subconscious level, that part of the bball media can revel in a fat white dude being the king of the land, but if prime MJ existed right now (with the same allurement), would the fawning over Jokic take precedence over him?

I'd think not.

shyt, if you were to ask 1000 random white NBA fans (in this country) who their favorite player is, I bet only a small portion of them would say Jokic. He's comprehensively the best player in the game, yet only has the 13th-highest selling jersey (which is unheard of).

To me, the praise by the media only becomes a problem when it's not warranted. Do you think it's reached a point where it's eclipsed his actual game, where him being white is used as a vehicle to deny Black players from getting the same recognition? All the best players in the league at the moment are foreign, so the bball media really has no choice but to fawn over those players who are a far cry from who they are.
I find myself annoyed in a way that I wasn't when they talked about Tim Duncan similarly. I mean he looks fat and slow and has super Saiyan Arnie Duncan game.

Ultimately, I'm a hater.
As great as Duncan was, perhaps some of that annoyance towards Jokic is because he's that good and the only way to deal with how good he is without admitting so, is to find solace in targeting those who praise his game?

It's like you can't say shyt about him, so the next course of action is to be annoyed at those who idolize him.

I don't know.

Maybe it's as simple as you said, and that you're a hater. At least you're honest with yourself and don't try to make up excuses like a lot of cats do on here.

I think because he is such a blank slate it's become easy for him to become the avatar of the "caclytic" crowd.

I think this is impossible to answer. This is probably true for LeBron at this point, but Jokic really is good.
White Americans don't identify with him in any capacity besides his lack of melanin.
I agree with this completely. I think it's a safe bet that more white Americans would name Ja or Ant as their favorite player than Jokic.
It's like you can't say shyt about him, so the next course of action is to be annoyed at those who idolize him.
I've got no gripe with Jokic. People writing fanfic about what his brothers would do to the Morriss twins while pathetic is not really on him. I'd just as easily ignore him unless he was playing my team or some other team I'd like to see lose. I was hype when the nuggets seemed like they were going to have a down year so I didn't have to hear 10-15 minutes of every podcast I listen to talk about how great he is.

I think youre taking the wrong approach on this whole topic. I used to consume NBA at a pretty high level: watching full games (outside of my team), interested in big matchups, checking for specific players/teams, seeking out analysis/reactions/breakdowns, closely following all the player movement with trade talks / free agency, etc, etc

now, I could give two shyts. Ill check in on the Bulls still as some lifelong allegiance thing, but I dont have the desire to watch all their games. I dont find myself ever interested in putting on a non Bulls games. I couldnt tell you one matchup that would catch my eye enough that I would seek the game out, I dont keep up with the league in any meaningful fashion. I dont care to consume ANY of the media surrounding the NBA. I find it all incredibly boring and non consequential. People around me feel the exact same way. I dont know anyone that follows the league like that anymore. TV ratings tell me the same thing, people arent watching games. National ratings have plummeted and there is a crisis going on with local TV deals. You can blame cord cutting or whatever else, but its pretty clear that people just arent watching GAMES anymore. There is so much content out there these days, and people have put the NBA aside for other things. I cant stress enough how much of this sentiment is shared amongst nearly everyone I talk to IRL too, its basically universal around me. And I see it more and more online too. Its real, and it should be concerning for the NBA.

also I couldnt feel any differently about football --- I find the games interesting, competitive and have a strong desire to watch and keep up with everything going on in the league

@Gil Scott-Heroin you have a strong reaction to this topic obviously, but my feelings are not me being disingenuous. At my core, I find the whole thing BORING, period. I dont really need much more justification beyond that as a consumer -- and its very evident to me I am not in the minority. I think the league should be concerned why so many people feel that way.
