How come Viacom gave up on MTV but kept BET going?

Cable in general is a dying platform aside from news and sports.

Most of the MTV branded originals like Teen Mom and The Challenge moved to Paramount+.

I also don't think it's a coincidence that Viacom, who also owns Pluto, has essentially turned MTV into a Pluto channel, with nothing but reruns of Ridiculousness, Catfish, and some old comedies from the mid-2000s.
From what I heard, the next season of Challenge All-Stars will also be on MTV. It won't be Paramount+ exclusive.

I wish they'd air repeats of current episodes though. Hell, they even took MTV's streaming option for people with cable subscriptions.
Neither channel is really doing much with it's airtime and because MTV does not preserve it's older media they can't even play it's classics from the 80s and 90s.
digital media rights did a number on them. There's a lot of stuff where they can't go back and air it because of licensing issues. That's why you can hop on YouTube and catch a lot of uploaded stuff that used to be on MTV that they don't even fight to take down. They'll let the labels do that shyt.

I think CMT (another Viacom property) still does do music videos, although even they consist of mainly reruns these days as well.
instead of Jamie Foxx, Wayans Bros and Living Single, they show Reba, Mom, and King of Queens
Funniest thing the shyt that could have saved them they put on MTV2 and kept the re runs going on MTV until people got totally turned off. MTV could have had the celeb podcast game on lock if they gave the bag to certain people :mjpls:

Honestly, VH1 happened to MTV. A lot of shyt they started airing was right up MTV's alley (that whole CelebReality era, they used to be too bougie for that.) Then they realized people wanted that shyt, so they brought all the fukkery to them. Then after that era they'd make a ton of shows that blew up (Love & Hip Hop, Black Ink Crew-- why BET never got that show I'll never understand). Other channels/services produced better shyt. Could you imagine if Atlanta was a BET show? If The Chi was regularly on there? If Dave was on MTV? Snowfall?

as for videos, look. They have channels that only air videos, free and on cable. Nobody watches them. The big reason of course is nobody needs to sit through countdown videos to watch a song they like. The other reason is, especially with hip-hop, you don't need to clean up your videos anymore. Most albums now drop with no single, no release dates, no announcements. If a video drops, shyt is mostly unedited, filled with shyt that would be blurred out or censored on MTV/BET and not aired at all on VH1 (VH1 was the :mjpls: of video networks). We've outlasted MTV's usefulness.

You know you're washed when you long for the days of MTV airing The Grind with uncoordinated white people twerking in Lake Havasu to megamixes of I Will Always Love You

All the old episodes of beavis and butthead are perfect examples of this. Half the episodes would be them doing commentary on music videos they don’t have the green light to air anymore.

BET is not the same as MTV ..both showed music videos sure…

But BET has always been about all forms of entertainment and it still fills a big need (programming catered to black folks)

It’s funny to think about, i remember growing up it felt like BET was getting shows with less budgeting and less original programming. They used to show baby boy liek 5x’s a week. That and a few other hood classics.
I bought the Blue Hill Avenue DVD cause i could never catch the entire movie on BET back in the day.

:russ:. Then my mom's jacked it from me and kept it for like a year.

I love that BET still plays the fukk out of Martin. Even though I can basically stream it all over the place. And MTV is good for some put Ridiculousness on in the background.

I think most people just decided that MTV stopped playing videos it stopped playing music. But, all of their reality shows were loaded with new songs and they always had a link to see the list of songs featured. Videos as a medium definitely seemed to die out, but I'm not sure if it was a chicken/egg thing with MTV and that medium.

See for me as a millenial the popping days of mtv were when they went all in with reality shows. Real world, Cribs, Pimp My Ride, Next, True Life (The Goat docu series), mtv unplugged, mtv news, etc. i didn’t even watch TRL

Same. I watched all that shyt. I was a diehard Challenge fan up until Challenge XXX and then they finally burned me out. I haven't come around to watch 40 just because I'm so out of the habit of watching it.

On spring break in '04 we met some of the girls from that Sorority life show from the season in Buffalo. Particularly the one with the misspelled tattoo and whatever girls she hung with some not featured on the show.

I transitioned to all-stars just cause it had more people i knew on it then they started bringing over the regular cast to all stars which defeat the purpose. It was fun watching the sick and flabby from back in the day coming back and conquering. It’s like MTV2 all over again, they just ended up combining them. :francis:

I don't know when you were in college. But our dining halls would just run MTV-U all day. That's why on the 04 spring break our hotel was right up against the MTV U setup. We thought we lucked into some great old school MTV Spring break shenanigans-we did not. And the only good concert we got was Ying Yang and Little John. And then when we got back to school never saw any of that shyt on MTV-U.
