How you gonna surpass the man you lost to?
And people were clamoring for Canelo to take that fight. Floyd didn't even want to take the fight. Floyd said "He's not ready yet, and if I beat him, you guys are going to discredit me, and say he's an incomplete fighter." Then the media called Floyd scared. He said "Fine i'll fight him if he really wants to fight. Floyd proceeds to dismantle him. "AHH that didn't mean anything Floyd. He's an incomplete fighter." Now that Canelo is in a power position people are quick to forget. It's not the fact that he loss to Floyd. it was the heralded media behind his pursuit of that match with Floyd that will forever be stuck with him. Is he a great fighter? Absolutely. Holding 15 different versions of the world title does more than justify that. What's your metric of surpassing Floyd?
02-05-2015 Floyd Mayweather V Manny Pacquiao PPV Buys 4,600,000 Gate $77.85 m
2 26-08-2017 Floyd Mayweather V Conor McGregor PPV Buys 4,300,000 Gate $58.35 m
3 22-09-2013 Floyd Mayweather V Canelo Álverez PPV Buys 2,200,000 Gate $26.52 m
4 20-05-2007 Floyd Mayweather V Oscar De La Hoya PPV Buys 2,480,000 Gate $19.89 m
Canelo still isn't doing these numbers and he has more pro fights than Mayweather.
Canelo can't go make 200 million of PPV sells of with an exhibition fighter, even with all those world titles Canelo has accumulated. Building a fighter, starts with building a story, and he just doesn't have that. People either love Mayweather or hate him. Canelo doesn't cause polarizing emotions in people like Floyd did. Floyd took what people thought and laughed to the bank each time. Can Canelo do that? I just don't think so.
