“Homeland” showrunner Alex Gansa dropped a few tidbits about the show’s upcoming fifth season during the Q&A session with actors and writers from the Showtime drama Friday night at Paleyfest.
The time frame of the show will jump ahead two and a half years from where it left off at the close of season four in December. “Homeland” will shoot in Europe later this year, probably Germany. And most intriguing, Gansa said, Claire Danes’ Carrie Mathison “will no longer be an intelligence officer,” he said.

Big news on opening night at PaleyFest: In what EP-director Alex Gansa called a “tiny, tiny teaser,” he revealed that Homeland Season 5 will jump forward 2 1/2 years. He also revealed that Claire Danes’ Carrie Mathison will “no longer be an intelligence officer” and that they will be shooting the show in Europe, “probably in Germany.”
“OK, that was bigger than I intended,” Gansa joked. When asked by panel moderator Julie Chen what country Germany would be standing in for, he said, “I can’t say another word.”
Last season, Homeland was set in Pakistan and spurred criticism from Pakistani officials about the way the country and its government were portrayed, with the storyline implying that Pakistani officials are aiding the Taliban. The show used South Africa to stand in for Pakistan. The final episode of Season 4 returned to Washington, D.C.
At January’s TCA, President of Showtime Networks David Nevin had said the Season 5 setting for Homeland remained up in the air. The statement came on the heels of the Charlie Hebdo terrorist attacks in France. “It’s a bit of a scary time to be a maker of controversial, political boundary-breaking show,” Nevins said. “It’s been a bad month for free speech around the world.”
