I think ultimately it's that 'follower count' is a bullshyt statistic that we think means something, but in a world of bots, and of multiple accounts and of people tossing a follow into the abyss because it costs them nothing... a lot of people have sold their follower count as them actually having a following, when really most these folks can't monetize their base using anything but sex
