Because it looked like he had the Rock Hudson character come out on a red carpet with the black dude as his boyfriend when in real life Rock Hudson never publicly came out as gay not even when he told the world he had AIDS.

It was known within Hollywood circles (other actors, directors, studio heads) that Hudson was gay but the actors kept his secret and the studios helped protect him from being outed. They would offer gossip rags some other lesser stars as sacrificial lambs to make sure no one ever ran the Hudson stories. They set up marriages between Hudson and actresses to make him seem like a "normal" heterosexual guy.

There were these books called Hollywood Babylon (about scandals and salacious stories from Hollywood's past) that detailed all of the lengths people went to in order to protect Hudson's secret because he was such a marketable movie star.
