What exact distinction are you making here? Pretty much everything that is a household pet somewhere is eaten somewhere else. Rabbits, guinea pigs, goats, horses, pigeons, fish, frogs, turtles, are all food animals for plenty of folk as well as pet animals and always have been. There are over 300,000 pet pigs in America (those are pets, not pigs raised to eat) and more than 100,000 pet poultry.

Maybe you could say that dogs are smart, but I think pigs are as smart or smarter than dogs. They're not as cuddly, but rabbits and guinea pigs are plenty cuddly, so....

Shrimp and crayfish are seen as basically underwater cockroaches, nasty bugs that muck around on the bottom eating whatever dead stuff they find. Clams and oysters are just snails filtering literal shyt out of the water. If you're ever watched a pig eat, or wallow, or do almost anything, it's one of the most disgusting animals around. And don't go into a chicken factory if you ever want to feel good about eating chicken again. Regionally bull testicles, cow brains, pig feet, and of course chitlins are all a thing.

Having spent time in the Arab world I wasn't impressed with their definitions of public health, hygiene, or sanitation. I don't imagine India is any better (I have less than no desire to go).
