The output is higher or at least comparable and more efficient at 8 cylinders. If I'm also not mistaken, I think the US is mandating a higher MPG across the whole line up of cars and it's partly why you're seeing smaller engines with turbos because they technically are more fuel efficient under everyday driving scenarios; you're not testing top line or 0-60 everytime you start your engine.
