You didn't know that? lol. Rakim, G rap, and LL are only 1 year older than Jay as well. Jay's first album dropped when he was 26 going on 27. By then, all of those guys had at least 4 albums. Jay getting a late start not only helped his career by studying these guys and their album making, but helped him avoid falling off as he did things that would have been considered "selling out" in their day, but it kept him relevant for decades( basically what LL did).
As for Kane, he got a raw deal with hip hop fans. The same things artists are praised for NOW, Kane was doing in the early 90s and basically killed his career. Doing songs for the ladies, making guest appearances on r&b tracks, and crossing over into the mainstream wearing suits on stage. Kane got destroyed for it and now crossing over is the standard

I could be wrong but i think it's the fact that Kane, Rakim, kool g rap, ll, krs, etc all started in the "old school era" for lack of a better word. Theyare all dope but something about their flows sounded distinctly old school (cadence, syllables they chose to emphasize, etc). Jay started in that old school era but his first album dropped in the beginning of the new era.
Nas' illmatic is sort of in between, 36 chambers is in between, doggystyle is in between. I don't know if I'm making sense but I'm talking about flows, delivery and production to a certain extent. So i think that's why kane and them seem way older.

Nothing but respect for Kane, but in the early 90's, he didn't know if he wanted to be an MC or Luther Vandross. Dude showed up to a show at The Muse in downtown NYC, dressed in a silk robe and suede slippers and got booed, lol. He started taking the "smooth" sh*t way too far and lost his edge. Then when he tried to get back on some street sh*t, he looked like someone's uncle that had been locked up for 29 years and just came home trying to adapt to what the young'uns were doing. It was bad.
