He was actually named after Nicholas Cage, who dated Kerr's niece before he was famous and who he remains close friends with til this day. He's talked about it on Bill Simmons' podcast a couple years back.

I guess it's mildly funny. What makes it really ironic is Steve Kerr named his son after his childhood friend, Nick Reynolds, a black man who became a serious activist after college and was murdered by American mercenary security forces in Botswana while trying to transport aid and food to a village of black Africans who'd been displaced by civil war and genocide. Which makes these cheap laughs kind of sad, really.
