In our communities, we have a lot of seniors living in dilapidated housing, we also have a wealth of Black children that are low skilled and often enter adulthood this way. One of the components of a rites of passage could be displaying a level of proficiency in the area of construction or general contracting.

Perhaps groups of young men are assigned to an elder's home and they are tasked with assessing the issues in it, devising a plan for repairs and executing against that plan.

This is only one idea of many that seeks to improve our communities on multiple fronts, leaving your community better than you found it and having a set of skills that are valuable and can translate into careers without higher education.
