Prison doesn't even really have to be like that. If Inmates were all smart and civilized they'd realize that it could legit be like staying at a motel for several years

but because most humans are idiots and savages at their core it becomes what you see in the OP.

Fill a prison up with Mark Zuckerberg/Neil Degrassi Tyson/Edward Snowden/Elon Musk types and it would legit be a phenomenal rent free experience with free meals and interesting conversations.

People would be intentionally commiting crime to go there and be enlightened and pampered
