AZ didn't get launched into stardom after 'Sugar Hill' cause you could score a hit, but you still gotta score another one to actually become a legit star and that didn't happen. 'Gimme Yours' and 'Doe or Die' as the follow-up singles didn't hit at all, so that was it or the Doe Or Die album. Then, I remember when 'Hey AZ' came out, it was pretty poorly received. It was like, aiiiight, but a very obvious reach to fit what everyone else was doing at the time and it didn't hit. So even tho' that Firm album kept him in the light for a minute, he wasn't delivering the records to keep him there. He was trying, but for whatever reason, people just didn't go for it.

ya'll all fail to realize.. Grand Daddy IU also had sugar free with the same sample. that cut back on the popularity of AZ's version

Cormega, Tradgedy, and Nore have all said how Nas was scared to be out rapped by AZ which is why no joint album ever happened. And I gotta say I believe what they say. Nas did a joint album with Damian Marley but not AZ lol.

Firm dropped in 1997, Distant relatives dropped in 2010.

AZ had no other solo hit records after sugar hill :yeshrug:

You gotta have records to be a rap star & he didnt go on to put out anything really that memorable after his solo debut :francis:

Nah az had a bunch of records that should of been big after that

Nas forced AZ on Illmatic. After hearing his verse. If Nas felt threatened or jealous in any kind of way. He wouldnt have made AZ the ONLY rap feature after hearing his verse. Also. Nas was on muliple songs on AZ’s debut. They done commercials together. Nas put him in The Firm. They made The Firm album. And Nas has collabed with AZ consistently up until about 04-05. And as far as why AZ didnt blow up like Nas. shyt just happens that way sometimes and AZ isnt as versatile an artist as Nas overall. AZ is still that nikka tho.

First reply the only one you need here. Sugarhill was hot, but you need consistency. Both in your singles, and in your albums. AZ is nice, but he didn't balance out well at all. Nas was gonna blow up bigger than AZ no matter what. There was supposed to be albums with Jay, Premier, etc. Sometimes scheduling and musical tastes don't make that shyt work.

A whole thread could be made on AZ and Nas' beat selection tbh lol. Very polarizing.
