But I will say this:I always thought it was sus that they came in taking shots at commercialized rappers and then did the deals that they did very soon. Oh well, I guess it didnt effect their music (Well aside from a couple of singles) so its fine

Great band but slightly overrated in certain circles with a good, if inconsistent, catalog

They benefited from being fairly visible at the turn of the millennium, and with ?uestlove becoming one of the first celebrity bloggers/taste makers. The Jay connection that ?uest pushed helped keep them in the mainstream eye as well

They're reputation as a live band, with an elite MC (Thought) and an outspoken music historian drummer (?uest), in addition to their connection to the Backpacker scene, and them being on a major label kinda pushed them forward

And they give one hell of a live show

Hip-Hop heads are not a monolith. Certain albums that are highly favored, I listen to them and don't see the big deal. There's plenty albums that deserve to be regarded as classics that get overlooked.

Just cuz people regard certain albums and artists as classics/legends don't mean we all gotta agree. So keep your panties in a bunch and stop getting offended over opinions of others.
