Black bears eat fresh meat AND carrion, doe.
Playing dead might work for brown bears, polar bears, grizzlies, and kodiak. They want freshly killed protein.
Bear behaviors are erratic to humans because we havent cohabitated with them for centuries like humans have with dogs & cats. Mace, slugs, noise, no eye contract, never turning your back, distraction techniques, punching the bear's nose and eyes, sprinting in a figure 8 pattern, etc? If it is September and the bear needs more body fat before it hibernates, then just call yourself Timothy Treadwell. :-(

Ive had dreams where there would be bears on my property trying to get into my house. In the dreams I would try to outrun them but I know in real life that the bear would catch up and maul me to death

The mama bear and the Russians? That baby bear lay flat with front paws crossed and his head on the ground as if to demonstrate to his mom that he had not instigated anything. The truth was that baby bear attempted to enter the shack TWICE. That Russian dog would not have barked at the baby bear unless his masters ordered him to do it. The dog saw the mom and 2nd baby bear coming up the hill, so he never left the shack to bark at 1st baby bear a 2nd time. He was not about that life. Did the shack lack a rear exit?
Too bad about the Japanese photographer. He managed to frame both bear and tent entrance perfectly in the final shot.
