Barry Sanders is actually still the collegiate leader in Rushing TDs at the FBS level with 37 in 1988 (11 games).
But it should be noted that Barry Sanders only had 1 great season in college, and that was 1988.
His first 2 years he had a combined 928 yards.
So if we're talking college (and I am), then Walker and Bo Jackson were the more accomplished players.
Barry played behind Thurman Thomas though in college. Its not like it is now where players will leave early routinely.
It was still just 1 season though. This shouldn't even be close. Barry set virtually every single season rushing record in 1988, his only season as a starter.
11 games, 344 carries, 2,628 yards, 7.6 ypc, 37 TDs. You would struggle to put up numbers like that in NCAA.
Over 300 carries and averaged 7.6 ypc.
If Barry was the featured back from the start, his numbers would have dwarfed those two. He damn near had as many TDs in 1988 than Jackson's entire collegiate career (and only ten less than Walker's entire career ) and Bo stayed all four years. It was still just 1 season though.
Bo and Herschel dominated for 3
I think the argument for Barry might be that he was more useful given his performance returning kicks.
But we can't take Barry's 1988 season and assume he replicates that over 3 or 4 years. If Barry was the featured back from the start, his numbers would have dwarfed those two. Bo shouldn't even be in the conversation if we're going by the numbers, which we are.
I'm not saying he'd put up godly numbers like that all three years, but 1,000 as a freshman and 1,500+ as a sophomore seems pretty plausible. But we can't take Barry's 1988 season and assume he replicates that over 3 or 4 years.
Anyway, I did just ask for people's opinions so I guess there's nothing wrong with picking Barry
in 3 years.
