I get your disdain for government programs and you're probably right in assuming it would go to shyt and not be managed correctly like most govt programs, but in an ideal world, its possible to use economies of scale on a massive level to lessen the education burden.

edit: Private colleges would raise cost because they can. Rich cacs will want there children to go to prestigious colleges, to obtain degrees that have actual value.
Free college educations reduces the degree earned there to a high school diploma in many ways.

So let them send them to private school. Thats not a burden on the tax base and actually increases the base as most of those schools still pay taxes.

Private schools have always been more prestigious and their degrees more valued so that doesn't change much.

If theres no competition to the govt, than they can charge whatever they want, potentially a lot less than the current rates.

its practically the only thing left on the liberal agenda. I preferred a free higher education bill over the healthcare bill. but its great we are having this conversation aloud.
hope they make it happen

I have no idea why this needs to be a liberal agenda
who doesn't have kids and want to save money on their education?

And oh yeah, Free healthcare is awesome too

How so? Rich "cacs" don't make up the majority of Americans attending college so that shouldn't be a major issue.

How does a diploma from a free college not mean as much as a diploma from a college that costs? Are stem degrees somehow different now because one cost and the other doesn't?

I listed 4 actual reasons, this was more of an afterthought, but I think its fair to say degrees from certain institutions are worth more than identical degrees from other institutions. Private institutions such as Stanford, Princeton, or Yale would give graduates degrees employers value slightly(or not so slightly) higher... in fact I think its that way now. You disagree? :patrice:
Seems like simple supply and demand to me, but I could be wrong.:manny:

The degrees are the same, but the access to networks and connections are not. I would know since I went to an Ivy league school and saw the opportunities it opened up for me opposed to my friends that didn't.

It's not too farfetched to believe that free colleges would be in competition with colleges like Columbia for top students that would normally take out thousands in school loans to go to Harvard or Yale.Seeing the prospect of a free education debt free is quite an appealing proposition. :ehh:

fukk ivy league schools, they're always going to get the "top" students. let us plebs go to public colleges for free.

Not necessarily. International students is plausible, but American students I think is 50/50

The value of a degree has diminished greatly under the loan system we have now. I cannot imagine how making them free would not further diminishing them.
If everyone has one, its meaningless... if everyday is a sunny day, whats a sunny day? same concept.
Even now many feel you have to have a masters to be taken seriously... idk :patrice: It sounds good, and feels good, but ultimately might not be worth the cost.

I think waiting on web colleges to develop might be a better route:obama:

its exactly the same premise as the healthcare issue. people of means will always justify their expenses, however, theres no doubt the general public will benefit immensely from this act.
