I don't think they were trying to abandon their cars. I think the two in the first car started running when the dude in the second car got out and start running towards them. They probably thought he had a gun and was chasing after them. If you look closely, the couple start running in the opposite direction and the dude in the first car looks like he start chasing after the dude in the first car. They eventually come back to their cars at the end of the video.
