if you were at the moment where you had a consistent paycheck...but you had the option of going to school and getting a Masters or PHD and risking losing the job you have now to pursue something with more money and prestige...would you do it?

lets say the job is a 50 k a year type job

would you go grad school and pursue that instead?

I've been in that exact predicament before and I chose grad school. However, it was an easy decision because 1) school is free plus I get a living stipend 2) I was in good place financially in regard to savings, credit card debt, etc 3) I was never staying in that job forever anyway

I would not make that decision all willy nilly though because there are a lot of hidden cost to being a grad student even if have a remission + stipend.

The worst thing in life is to live with "I wish, I would've, could've, should've" mental torment

Take a risk, live with the fact you had the courage to do so. Most folks don't

Eh school back in the day use to mean something. Now with the economy the way it is school is putting folks in debt and still not guaranteeing you success after it's over. But the way they program us nowadays we're taught to believe that a formal education trumps all when nowadays it don't mean what it use to.

:beli: This has nothing to do with the thread.

You don't think we have heard this nonsensical rant before:comeon:

PhDs carry the same weight that it did years ago. A lot of people have BAs, not a lot of people have a doctorate.

True <1% of the US population holds a PhD or Professional Degree
Masters are less than 5%

Myself. fukk 12(1)!
I went to grad school, but I was able to keep my job (and my tuition was 1/2 off because I worked for the school I went to).

I don't regret it, but do what you think will be the best for you in the long run... do you see yourself advancing in the company or doing what you want without the advanced degree? If so, then I'd say stick with the job. If not, go get that schooling (if it won't be a hardship to you).

In this economy, a stable job is better. Having a Ph.D won't necessarily confer all that many more benefits than having a masters will for most jobs, but you will be taking on a boatload more debt. You don't want to have a debt bomb hanging over your head when tehe economy goes boom, and you need to realize that student debt isn't something you can go bankrupt on like other forms of debt. Don't get a Ph.D unless you absolutely need it.

get a job with a school and go for free. My friend works for Northwestern University at their Chicago campus. She is about to get her PhD there for free. I'm trying to go the same route, but with one of these online schools or something. I just want the free education. If not then fukk school. Thats just me tho. Do what you do.
