I want to gain muscles/weight , but I don't know what exercises I'm supposed to do to get them. & I don't want to loose by boobs (I barely have any now) or get muscular in the wrong places and end up looking masculine. I also do not know how to use most of the machines or how to do proper squats/lunges and other things like that. I was thinking about getting a personal trainer.

I wanted to know:

How/Where did you find them?(I'm in chicago.)
What gym did you go to?
How often did you see them and how much did it cost?
Was it difficult to work out on your own after you stopped seeing them?
Did you use the work out plan that they made for you after you stopped seeing them?
Do you think it was worth it?

Other questions:
What foods can I eat that will help me gain muscle and healthy fat?
I don't want to take any protien shakes and other stuff like that. I was thinking about drinking ensure complete nutrition though.

What gym did you go to? worked out at his facility
How often did you see them and how much did it cost? 5 days a week...group personal training made this possible, we worked in a group but everyone had their own program
Was it difficult to work out on your own after you stopped seeing them? Yep :francis: not hard to get cardio in, but hard to keep lifting. His program was hard as fukk and I just don't feel like I'm doing anything comparable when lifting on my own
Did you use the work out plan that they made for you after you stopped seeing them? Sometimes, I had my own program before him, so some days I do something similar to his other days I do my old regimen.
Do you think it was worth it? yep, gained somewhere between 10-20 pounds of muscle

whey protein is great supplement, no idea why you're against it. I use biochem natural flavor (hate those fake sweet protein powders) I mix it smoothies and my oatmeal, I also eat 6 iz of Greek yogurt 4-5 times a week, another easy 15-22g of protein for 100-120 calories. Egg whites are good as well. But no food is gonna help you build muscle if you ain't lifting.

I wouldn't worry about gain muscle to the point of looking masculine. That's difficult enough for women that unless it's a goal it isn't happening by circumstance.

I would take any nutrition advice from a trainer fairly lightly. You can do that research yourself.

Why no protein shakes as opposed to ensure? The macros on those are :francis:

Foods have three macro nutrients:

Protein
Carbohydrates
Fat

The content of the Ensure protein to carbohydrate is pretty high. And the overall carbohydrates is damn high.

since you're a woman.. I would go to one of the cheap crossfit or zumba gyms (if Chicago is like ATL, they should be popping up all over the city by now)
they're relatively inexpensive (depending on the area), and have some legit sessions
you might also luck out and find someone who can help you out with your nutrition

If you have the money and you want to do it, then by all means... You can learn the majority of the info you need on your own if you're willing to put in the time and effort. Nutrition and how to have proper form( and how to use the machines correctly) is 9/10ths of what PT's do.

Go for it. The PT can definitely help you out with your concerns.

As far as what foods to eat to gain:
1. The number one thing to do is to eat high carb foods, both fast digesting and slow digesting - foods like dried fruit, Quinoa, rice, oatmeal, corn flower, pasta, Bread (maybe..) etc..
2. Secondly eat healthy fats and proteins such as: Avacado, Coconut oil, almonds, walnuts, hemp seed, Kale, Spinach, Quinoa, eggs, Meat such as chicken (maybe..) and fish
3. Cant neglect basic fruits and veggies of course...

The key is to eat high volume and train with a high volume (heavy load / sets)

The only supplements I'd recommend is Magnesium, vitamin C, and a protein source (organic plant based protein - ditch the WHEY)

If you have the money and you want to do it, then by all means... You can learn the majority of the info you need on your own if you're willing to put in the time and effort. Nutrition and how to have proper form( and how to use the machines correctly) is 9/10ths of what PT's do.

That's questionable. PTs do much more than that. Job responsibility includes: Injury prevention, Spotting, Motivation, Skill checking, Coaching, Holding clients accountable, Convenient exercise prescription.Convenient Program progression, Program structure, Program design etc..all according to each clients specific needs and desires on a given day.

Doing a simple internet search (which isn't so simple these days with all the info out there) as opposed to having a dialogue of question and answer with a knowledgeable professional human being is a world of difference..

it all depends on the type of person you are. most of the info a trainer tells you, you can find online for free. the main thing is that there is a lot of clutter online while the trainer in theory "knows" what's relevant and irrelevant, what's true and what's not. the reason i say in theory is that like anything else, you have good ones and bad ones.

after that it all comes down to motivation and help with correcting your form. being a PT is a hustle like anything else but it's not necessarily a ripoff. you might need it, you might not.

only good programs i know for beginning is Stronglifts 5X5 and Starting strength.

good luck and however you choose to go about it, go for it!!!

Honestly if you join a gym, you can find one there. There are always people offering their services, and some gyms have them on staff.
