AL.com reporter Natalie Pierre Williams started fire that severely burned her, police say

AL.com reporter Natalie Pierre Williams started fire that severely burned her, police say
AL.com sports reporter Natalie Pierre Williams suffered severe burns as a result of a car fire she started, Hoover police announced today.

Williams remains in UAB hospital, where she is being treated for burns over 75 percent of her body and has undergone multiple surgeries.

Over the past few weeks, Williams has been alert and talking to friends and family, according to Michelle Holmes, vice-president of content for Alabama Media Group. UAB would not disclose her official condition.

Williams' husband and mother declined to comment.

Williams has been a patient at UAB Hospital since Sept. 8 – her 26th birthday – when Hoover police were dispatched at 2:34 a.m. to a wreck at The Park at Galleria apartments. A passerby called 911 after seeing flames coming from a car.

Hoover police and fire officials investigated the case for the past six weeks, said Police Capt. Gregg Rector. No charges will be filed in the case, he said.

"Our goal was always to determine the facts and establish how this fire started and what caused it. It was clearly suspicious in nature from the beginning but very challenging to get to the point we are today. We said from the very beginning that we would let the evidence tell us what actually happened, and the evidence in this case is now clear," Rector said.

Although the incident was originally described as a fire that started as a result of a car crash, Hoover police said today the crash was not serious and did not cause the fire.

"Many people drew conclusions and made assumptions about this case but we sought the truth and we've found it, and the evidence supports those findings," Rector added.

"From the very beginning of this case, there were only three possibilities. We knew the fire was either caused by Mr. or Mrs. Williams or was accidental, due to the crash. The accidental scenario was quickly ruled out and through a lot of hard work we were able to determine who was responsible.

"This was a sad, horrific situation that involved a young lady who is still battling very serious injuries. She still has a long road to recovery and we certainly hope she is able to heal. She needs everyone's support."

It is not clear, Rector said, whether she intended to harm herself.

"We still don't know exactly what prompted her actions that night but it appears there were a lot of emotions involved and sometimes actions and decisions are not responsible during those type moments," Rector said.

Although the couple only lived in Hoover for a few months, police had responded to three separate domestic violence calls involving the two in a span of about six weeks, according to reports provided by Rector.

  • On June 12, at 11:52 p.m., officers responded to the couple's apartment on a domestic violence complaint. They were involved in a physical altercation and both were arrested for misdemeanor domestic violence.
  • On July 25, 2015 at 1:55 a.m., officers responded to a domestic incident at the couple's apartment. This was reported as a verbal argument only and no arrests were made.
  • A little more than an hour later, at 3 that morning, officers responded back to the same location on a report of a domestic violence complaint. Both parties called 911 but Natalie was not on the scene when officers arrived. Officers made contact with Chasten but no arrest was made.
The fire investigation began, Hoover police said today, when a caller to 911 reported seeing a vehicle in a wooded area near the 500 block of Hampton Park Drive.

The caller did not see anyone in or near the vehicle. A second witness reported the car was fully engulfed in flames at 2:38 a.m. The first police officer on the scene arrived at 2:39 a.m.

Williams was found near the vehicle with severe burns. She was taken to the UAB Hospital Burn Unit.

Her husband, 30-year-old Chasten Leigh Williams, told police he pulled his wife from the burning car. He was taken to UAB Hospital where he was treated for minor burn injuries and released.

Chasten Williams told officers he got out of the vehicle after the crash and walked toward his apartment. He said he returned minutes later and discovered the car in flames.

Hoover Police and Fire Department Arson Investigators, along with the City of Hoover Fire Marshal, conducted "a thorough and exhaustive investigation into the crash and subsequent fire," a press release stated.

The findings of that investigation included:

  • The crash itself was not serious. It caused minor front-end damage when the vehicle struck a small tree. It is not known what caused the driver to leave the roadway and strike the tree.
  • Both occupants acknowledge there was a verbal domestic argument prior to the crash.
  • Debris samples taken from the interior of the vehicle were sent to a laboratory for analysis. Those samples tested positive for an accelerant -- gasoline.
  • A wand-style lighter was found in a grassy area near the vehicle.
  • Melted remnants from a two-gallon gasoline container were found inside the vehicle.
  • Surveillance video from a nearby convenience store shows Natalie Pierre Williams purchasing a wand-style lighter, a two-gallon gas can and a gallon of gasoline several minutes before the fire was reported.
"Physical evidence and interviews with both parties involved have led investigators to conclude that the fire was caused by the actions of Mrs. Williams. There will be no criminal charges stemming from this unfortunate and tragic incident. The investigation is now complete and no further details will be released," the press release stated.

"It is the hope of the Hoover Police and Fire Department that the victim is able to have a full recovery. We urge everyone to please offer encouragement and support, not judgment, to this family in their time of need."

"All of us, throughout the Alabama Media Group, are holding Natalie closely in thoughts and prayers; we know so many of our readers and others across the country are as well. What matters now is that she continues to get well," Holmes said.

Williams joined AL.com in 2014 as a college football reporter who primarily covers the SEC. Prior to joining AL.com, she spent four years covering Florida State football and played collegiate volleyball.

Sooooooo....instant reaction.

Jimbo is NOTHING without Jameis. As much as we hear this QB whisperer bullshyt, the man cannot call a game. Especially ones he's expected to win. There's nothing fluid or game redefining about it. Someone needs to put the pressure on him to bring in a competent OC. And it ain't Randy Sanders. He couldn't even relay the correct play call in when we were in the RZ and DC came out which caused us to burn a timeout.

Trickett needs to be taken out to pasture. There has to be a better line coach out there. Has to be. This line has been shyt all season but extra shyt the last three weeks.

Rudolph & Lane are disappointments. Hands of stone. Give their PT to one of the youngins. Preferably Harrison or Tate. Hell, anyone who can stretch the field. Or how about letting them stay in the game to get some type of rhythm and not switching them out every play

They've overused Dalvin. No other back on the roster had a carry. Unacceptable.

LB depth issues finally caught up with us.

He a freshman and he made plays but there's no way Derwin should've let that dude get behind him.

This loss might not be the worst thing. Our coaches have been trotting a half ass squad out onto the field for literally two years now, but didn't get much flack because we were winning. :yeshrug:

Maybe this 3 loss season will get some incompetent people replaced, and Jimbo to reevaluate somethings (calling plays, etc).

Not even shell shocked like I was in Raleigh. Can't even be mad at Kelly tonight. This one falls on the shoulders of the HC.

There has to be an offensive wunderkid somewhere that grew up honing his skills on Deion Sanders' Primetime on Sega, Madden '94, etc. that could really improve our offense. Jimbo just has a limited imagination, and seemingly calls plays with no rhyme or reason. I'm not saying this because this loss. I've been felt like this. I remember when we played OKST last year -- they burned Jalen on a deep TD in the 2nd half because they'd been showing the same look and formation all game, and throwing this quick little screen. Well, they showed the same look, but instead of a screen they ran a little stutter and go and Jalen thinking it was going to be a screen was toasted. We NEVER hit plays like that nor set them up like that, and I was sitting there like :jbhmm:.

Its not surprising they caught an L. It was coming. This team for the last year and a half has played with fire and it finally caught up with them.

@klutch2381 said it earlier and I agree with him something is off/missing right now. Is it Coaching? Complacency? I'm not sure what it is :patrice:

Even when jimbo was building this thing up we would have games where we would labor against teams, but we had our fair share of blowout wins nowadays we we can't even blow teams out. Damn near every games is tight. We just can't put teams away

I think it's coaching. Particularly, Jimbo. This is what I mean: Jimbo is like a great prize fighter that instead of getting his opponents out of the ring early will more times than not carry them to a decision. It's been his M.O. as coach outside of 2013. He's very conservative, but super confident. It's a weird mix. Like, dude will open up the playbook against Miami and the offense will look great, and then we'll play someone else and he'll have the most basic ass offense known to man installed. We go out to provo and open up on BYU. Offense looks unstoppable. We come back the next week as we play USF and the basic ass offense is back -- score 7 points -- and lose. It's a feast and famine thing and it's a running theme. Jimbo thinks we should handle these teams with our D offense. Occasionally, the other dude is going to hit you with some fluky shyt and beat you if you let him stay in there with you. We've been getting away it because our conference sucks, but this has been a very :ehh: team for two years now.

I don't think he's a bad coach. I'm not saying that. But, I do think his overconfidence/stubbornness is his biggest foible as a coach.

Not bad but I'll go out on a limb and say he's mediocre. Me & one of the homies was arguing about him last night. My argument, if you have a raw o-line, mobile QB, why in the fukk are you trying to keep this guy in the pocket, have receivers run timing routes? Move the pocket, run more 3-step drops, USE THE SCREEN GAME!! No deep threat that actually gets PT even though we all knew the intermediate pass was not EG's strong suit but he was nice with the deep ball. Why you have a RB who has been running on bad hamstring the past 3 weeks and this game NO OTHER RB got a carry? There's NO innovative play calls from him (i.e. jailbreak screens, motion shuffle passes to Kermit, etc..). It's about as basic of an offense you can run. The fact he admitted last week leading up to the game that we had been game planning for GT since after the Miami game and then this is what we get shows he's a piss poor planner/schemer. Not saying I want him gone but if he jumps to another school or NFL, I won't shed one single fukkin tear.

Jimbo is like the Larry Brown of college football. He wants to win, but he only wants to win "his way." Saban is similar, but he's shown more flexibility than Jimbo by bringing in Kiffin and trying to modernize his offense.
