Natalie Pierre Williams suffered severe burns as a result of a car fire she started, Hoover police announced today.
Williams remains in UAB hospital, where she is being treated for burns over 75 percent of her body and has undergone multiple surgeries.
Over the past few weeks, Williams has been alert and talking to friends and family, according to Michelle Holmes, vice-president of content for Alabama Media Group. UAB would not disclose her official condition.
Williams' husband and mother declined to comment.
Williams has been a patient at UAB Hospital since Sept. 8 – her 26th birthday – when Hoover police were dispatched at 2:34 a.m. to a wreck at The Park at Galleria apartments. A passerby called 911 after seeing flames coming from a car.
Hoover police and fire officials investigated the case for the past six weeks, said Police Capt. Gregg Rector. No charges will be filed in the case, he said.
"Our goal was always to determine the facts and establish how this fire started and what caused it. It was clearly suspicious in nature from the beginning but very challenging to get to the point we are today. We said from the very beginning that we would let the evidence tell us what actually happened, and the evidence in this case is now clear," Rector said.
Although the incident was originally described as a fire that started as a result of a car crash, Hoover police said today the crash was not serious and did not cause the fire.
"Many people drew conclusions and made assumptions about this case but we sought the truth and we've found it, and the evidence supports those findings," Rector added.
"From the very beginning of this case, there were only three possibilities. We knew the fire was either caused by Mr. or Mrs. Williams or was accidental, due to the crash. The accidental scenario was quickly ruled out and through a lot of hard work we were able to determine who was responsible.
"This was a sad, horrific situation that involved a young lady who is still battling very serious injuries. She still has a long road to recovery and we certainly hope she is able to heal. She needs everyone's support."
It is not clear, Rector said, whether she intended to harm herself.
"We still don't know exactly what prompted her actions that night but it appears there were a lot of emotions involved and sometimes actions and decisions are not responsible during those type moments," Rector said.
Although the couple only lived in Hoover for a few months, police had responded to three separate domestic violence calls involving the two in a span of about six weeks, according to reports provided by Rector.
- On June 12, at 11:52 p.m., officers responded to the couple's apartment on a domestic violence complaint. They were involved in a physical altercation and both were arrested for misdemeanor domestic violence.
- On July 25, 2015 at 1:55 a.m., officers responded to a domestic incident at the couple's apartment. This was reported as a verbal argument only and no arrests were made.
- A little more than an hour later, at 3 that morning, officers responded back to the same location on a report of a domestic violence complaint. Both parties called 911 but Natalie was not on the scene when officers arrived. Officers made contact with Chasten but no arrest was made.
The fire investigation began, Hoover police said today, when a caller to 911 reported seeing a vehicle in a wooded area near the 500 block of Hampton Park Drive.
The caller did not see anyone in or near the vehicle. A second witness reported the car was fully engulfed in flames at 2:38 a.m. The first police officer on the scene arrived at 2:39 a.m.
Williams was found near the vehicle with severe burns. She was taken to the UAB Hospital Burn Unit.
Her husband, 30-year-old Chasten Leigh Williams, told police he pulled his wife from the burning car. He was taken to UAB Hospital where he was treated for minor burn injuries and released.
Chasten Williams told officers he got out of the vehicle after the crash and walked toward his apartment. He said he returned minutes later and discovered the car in flames.
Hoover Police and Fire Department Arson Investigators, along with the City of Hoover Fire Marshal, conducted "a thorough and exhaustive investigation into the crash and subsequent fire," a press release stated.
The findings of that investigation included:
- The crash itself was not serious. It caused minor front-end damage when the vehicle struck a small tree. It is not known what caused the driver to leave the roadway and strike the tree.
- Both occupants acknowledge there was a verbal domestic argument prior to the crash.
- Debris samples taken from the interior of the vehicle were sent to a laboratory for analysis. Those samples tested positive for an accelerant -- gasoline.
- A wand-style lighter was found in a grassy area near the vehicle.
- Melted remnants from a two-gallon gasoline container were found inside the vehicle.
- Surveillance video from a nearby convenience store shows Natalie Pierre Williams purchasing a wand-style lighter, a two-gallon gas can and a gallon of gasoline several minutes before the fire was reported.
"Physical evidence and interviews with both parties involved have led investigators to conclude that the fire was caused by the actions of Mrs. Williams. There will be no criminal charges stemming from this unfortunate and tragic incident. The investigation is now complete and no further details will be released," the press release stated.
"It is the hope of the Hoover Police and Fire Department that the victim is able to have a full recovery. We urge everyone to please offer encouragement and support, not judgment, to this family in their time of need."
"All of us, throughout the Alabama Media Group, are holding Natalie closely in thoughts and prayers; we know so many of our readers and others across the country are as well. What matters now is that she continues to get well," Holmes said.
