Hard for me to judge this game because of the competition, but we did what we were supposed to do. I feel like we will be fine this season. I like the little stuff that I saw from this team like the camaraderie, teammates happy for each other. Communication on D was big n key, saw a lot of effort from the youngins and some of the veterans that many have written off..lol. Im glad we get these tune up games so this team get some confidence and more cohesion as a team.

Really love what Fisher has done to this program. That shyt he be talking about family, team, love, and respect for each other is real and it shows on the field. shyt will win games for you.

I have no idea how credible this guy is as for his knowledge of the game, but it seemed to be on point from what I saw

Canolee's trench notes

I was a little more skeptical about this game than most. For the following reasons… 1. They were 7-5 team that could/should have went to a bowl last year and lost at Illinois 42-35. 2. Their seasoned coach 3. They had a lot of the offensive skill coming back and a spread offense 4. Like Florida and California, there are enough good players in Texas to fall through the cracks to a place like Texas State. Throw in an hour delay and there were plenty of reasons to struggle. But outside of a few poor second quarter special teams plays, we went out and did what we had to do, something the 2014 club didn’t always do.

OL: while Texas State isn’t exactly the ‘85 Chicago Bears Defense, you had to be impressed with our ability to run early and often and pass protect later in the game.

LT Rojo-A+, it’s hard to imagine that there is a better LT in the country right now and we have our guy for at least 28-29 more games. He played almost as perfect a game as you can play and had the high score of 109(2 for a great block, 1 for an effective block, 0 for a stalemate or inactivity, -1 for getting beat, -2 for getting beat and play results in a loss or turnover). Any time we asked him to seal the edge or kick out his man, he did so with ease. Examples of this were with 850 left in the first on an 18 yard Cook run where Rojo pancaked his man , had another pancake a minute later on a 5 yard Pender run and then a great block on a Pender 20 yard run(655, 1rst). On Cook’s second TD, he sealed the edge on a play that wasn’t blocked especially well and 4 did the rest. He had an excellent kick out on another Cook 36 yard run(730,2ncd) and then got a good push on Pender’s 1 yard TD run. He was also stellar in pass pro and his best block came on the TD pass to Bobo where he basically blocked his man and the perimeter blitzer. However, to prove that he is in fact human, he was called for a holding penalty and while it wasn’t a great block, anyone who watched this game will tell you that Rojo didn’t need to cheat to do his job against Texas State. For the record, I thought that both teams were very clean up front save for a few mis holds and one dangerous block on NLS I’ll get to later. Golson’s LT last year is a first round pick in the upcoming draft, but his LT this year is better.

LG Are-B, I thought he played a very solid game despite having the low score of 84. He did a good job getting movement in the run game and anchoring in pass pro. The one thing he needs to work on however, is his pulling/trapping. At 250 left in the 2ncd, he pulled when he wasn’t supposed to and collided with a pulling Wilson Bell and the play lost 9 yards as a result. Additionally, the few other times he was asked to loop around he may have been a hair slow or we have to ask our RB’s to have a little more patience(Pender did this a few times in the game and should have set his blocks up a little better). Are’s highlights were a pancake on a Pender 5 yard run(730, 1rst), a great block on a Pender 20 yard run the next play, an excellent block at the second level on a Cook 36 yarder(730,2ncd), got a good push on Pender’s TD and a good assist to Martinez(who was beaten) in pass pro on a third down completion too Pig. Overall, Kareem put in a good days work.

C Martinez-B+. I had Corey with the second lowest score of 85, but I was impressed with his play, especially with his athleticism to get down field in a hurry. Now I’ll pump the breaks until he plays against bigger, more explosive interior DL, but this was a performance to build on. He was the only guy on the OL with multiple –‘s(actually Bell had two penalties). The first was on a 2ncd and 1 where he was driven back and the NT made the play, but we were still able to gain 3 yards and get the first down(840,2ncd). The second he wasn’t able to get the NT hooked on a stretch play and his man made the tackle, but we were able to still gain 4 yards. Corey’s best blocks were getting a good push on a Pender 5 yard run(730,1rst), a 20 yard Pender run(655,1rst), at the second level on a 36 yard Cook run(730,2ncd), a good push on Pender’s TD and a pancake at the second level as Cook picked up a 3rd and 15(130,2nc). He was also pretty good in pass pro, but USF will probably have a few bigger DT’s to contend with and that should be a good test. Eberle only got a handful of snaps so it’s hard to compare, but right now, there would be no reason to change things up.

RG Bell-B+, the only thing that kept Wilson from an A- grade were the two late false starts penalties. Otherwise, he was very good and was tied for second highest score of 93. His best blocks were on a 20 yard Pender run(655,1rst), leading a 3rd and 15 run by Cook which was the same play as the one that Are missed his assignment(130,2ncd) and a good job in pass pro. He even pancaked a blitzer on a play, but Golson made one of his few mistakes on the night and held the ball too long and the defender was able to get up and make the sack before the half. One thing Bell may have to monitor is his aggressiveness. Sometimes he is looking for the kill shot instead of making the solid block. That should come with maturity/experience, that being said ,as our coach would say… ‘you rather say whoa, than giddy up’ .

RT Ruble-A-, he was tied with Bell for second highest grade(93) and he missed the last drive with the 1’s. Not sure if he was dinged up or Trickett just wanted to get Kelly one series with the first team. But I was pleasantly surprised with Ruble and didn’t expect him to be this improved, so soon. His lone – came on an inside move that got a hit on Golson in the 3rd quarter, something I eluded to after the spring game. And Ruble still lumbers a bit in space, but he looks more athletic and is playing with much better pad level. I also worried about him on backside cut off, but he did a great job on a Cook 18 yard run (850,1rst) and that will allow cut back lanes for our talented RB’s down the road. He also did a nice job on a 20 yard Pender run(655,1rst) and looked imposing in pass pro. I didn’t see enough of Kelly to grade him, but this position after one week looks like a strength.

I have to add while I don’t focus on TE blocking, it’s looks like Izzo is a really nasty dude. And Stephenson looks much better as a blocker. This season

DL: while we didn’t post the sack totals we were all hoping for, we did do a nice job affecting the QB with our interior stunts and length.

Walker-B+, overall he had a very solid game and most of his highlights came when he moved inside on third down. He got an early QB hit on 3rd in 25 working a stunt with Newberry(who took two OL with him)1120,1rst) and another one on 4rth down utilizing the same play with #4. He also made a nice tackle knifing inside(240,1rst) from his DE spot and had another QB hit from the interior on a screen play where he was unblocked(230,3rd). I think the only play I was disappointed in was a QB zone read where he needed to be more physical with the LT and find the ball(not sure if we were asking him to two gap there on the short side of the field, but 24 got stuck inside by the fake handoff and a gap block form the OL). The run set up Texas State’s FG. I like how we used Walker in this game, because I don’t see him as a consistent pass rusher on the edge.

Pugh-B-, it was a pretty quiet night for Jacob statistically. He had an early assist on an option play(1345,1rst), a pressure later in the game with Christmas(400,3rd) and a nice tackle in pursuit on a 3rd down screen play stopping it short(230,3rd). As a pass rusher in our third down package, he didn’t flash, but I think our game plan was to keep the QB in the pocket and create pressure with our interior stunts, which worked. Texas State’s QB got the ball out of his hand very quickly and as a result, we didn’t really attack the OT outside shoulder with our DE’s.

Sweat-B-, as I stated with Pugh, I don’t think we wanted our DE’s to get too far upfield when we pass rushed, which would create a running lane for the QB. That being said, I noticed that Sweat was lining a half yard off the ball at times and that needs to be corrected. And I was hoping to see more electric get offs, but it’s just amazing that he actually played in this game considering the injury he suffered last year. The one time he used his hands really well, he got a pressure and a hit before the half(:05,2ncd). He also had an explosive looking pressure on a screen play that he disrupted(200, 1rst).He was solid against the run. He had a tackle pursuing inside out and our DB’s did a good job keeping leverage(:10,1rst), then two tackles squeezing inside(1000, 4rth and 355,4rth), the second forcing a fumble with #14. As well as another tackle with Arthur Williams on the last drive(:40,4rth). He hasn’t even scratched the surface. It’s going to take a few games, but he’s going to be an impact player by the end of the season IMO.

Newberry-A, I’m glad we didn’t force him out the door the way some of our fans were hoping for in the offseason. He looked like 5th year senior on a mission and did a good job as a SDE and creating room for Walker on our interior stunts in our third down package taking on double teams and still getting movement. Early in the game he held the edge and made a tackle with 24 for no gain(615,1rst). Then made a tfl and showed good change of direction on a 3rd down screen play. The next drive he was held at LDE and still managed to assist on the play on a QB draw. He also smelled out a few screens, one forcing the QB to throw it away(524,2ncd) and the other he got leverage on the RB and forced him inside to Pugh to clean up(230,3rd). He also got a pressure on 3rd and twelve and Walker chased down the QB from behind on 3rd down short of the sticks forcing a punt(350,2ncd). A lot of people forget he was on the field as KB was catching the game winning pass in the 2013 National Championship and has switched positions three times to help the team. I’m glad #4 is having some success. Lets hope he builds on this performance.

Leonard-inc, he didn’t get a ton of opportunities, so it’s hard to grade. However, he did do a nice job holding the edge at SDE on a stretch play and forcing it inside, but his help was a little tardy(1000,2ncd) and he made a nice tackle after beating his block inside(707,4rth). I also think he disrupted a third down passing lane to the RB when they put their 2ncd team QB in with his length. He’s probably still a year away and the emergence of Newberry buys us some time, but he’s a guy that is always going to play hard no matter the situation.

Casher-inc, he started pretty slowly but finished with a tfl on a screen(212,4rth) and I thought he seemed more energized as he got more reps. I still think he has ability and we are going to need him this year.

NLS-B-, I felt like he also started slowly and it looked like the weight loss hurt his ability to anchor against double teams. He also over penetrated on an aforementioned zone read play that set up a FG and left the B gap wide open for the QB. But then in the second quarter it seemed like he got into the flow making two tackles(447, 2ncd and 905,3rd). He was also around the pile a few times. He wasn’t on the field for obvious passing situations, so I might ask him to put on a few of the LB’s he lost.

Nnadi-B+, he was very solid in the opener and has really heavy hands. I had him on an assist hustling out on a screen(1345,1rst), then eating up a double team and forcing the QB to keep on an option play(1200,1rst) and making a tackle on a B gap run(1200, 2ncd). Both he and NLS did a good job stacking the middle on a Walker tackle(240,1rst) and then again on an NLS tackle(447,2ncd). It wasn’t a stat stuffing day, but he did what was asked of him. Big plays will follow.

Mitchell-B, he didn’t get a ton of opportunities to make plays but was solid when he was in the game. He just has to keep his pad level down more consistently. He was involved in a tfl with Christmas(1500,2ncd) and had good penetration that Leonard held up, but he has to stay a little more disciplined and finish the play. He’s a good football player, we need him to stay healthy. I also wouldn’t mind seeing him or Newbery at NT in our three man prevent rush. Their long arms and experience inside give them an advantage over Walker IMO.

Christmas-B+, I was really happy with what I saw out of Dec 25th. He got blown up a few times, but he played with so much more aggression than what I saw from him last year. He has obviously realized that there is no time like the present(pun intended). I had him for a tfl when he got good penetration(1500, 2ncd) and pressure as a pass rusher(400, 3rd). He later got more penetration that blew up a play that Phillips stopped for a loss(1300, 4rth) and he looked really physical on a Leonard tackle(707, 4rth). Finally he did a great job clogging the middle in Goal line(617,4rth) and batted a pass(130,4rth). Very encouraging effort for #90.

Jones-inc, but I was happy with what I saw from him building on a strong Spring Game. He also had good penetration on a play with Mitchell and Leonard, but just has to stay disciplined in pursuit(1000,2ncd). He did later in the game and had a nice tackle outside(1330,4rth) and then clogged the middle during a goal line run with Christmas(617,4rth). I thought he was clipped on their 4rth down TD pass which looked a little dirty IMO, but overall Texas State had one of the cleaner OL we’ll play. He’s going to be a good player by next year IMO.

Bryant-inc, it seems like Christmas has passed him on the depth chart but through no fault of his own. He still looks good and is moving well. We’ll need him at some point this year.

Williams-inc, he also seems to be playing with more intensity and is a big strong kid. I had him on a late tackle with Sweat(:40, 4rth) and his best football is definitely ahead of him.

Overall, it was a very business like performance and even thought it’s one game against a non power 5 school, you have to be encouraged.

Nah I saw the game live I meant to say Golson is gonna be fine in this O as long as Jimbo isn't forcing him to throw the ball 40 times a week the way BK seemed to do at ND out of shotgun.

Jimbo needs to not turn pass happy the way he's done before in games we got probably talent wise P4P one of the deepest stables of RB's in country we need to use them. We got plenty of WR's but we don't need to be going Charlie Ward fastbreak offense ride these RB's and open up some big plays with playaction later.

I don't wanna see Jimbo going into pass, pass, pass, punt the way he would with EJ some games a few years back fukking up offensive rhythm.

Amen

I think we going undefeated thru the regular season breh:lupe:

Im not impressed with any of the teams they say can beat us on the schedule and we have the most experienced QB out of everyone we play.:wow:

Only thing that concerns me is the defense is usually shaky...and it happens at the wrong time. We don't have Famous Jameis to make sure we skrong no more:mjcry:

I think we'll cover. I meant to bet on that -29 last week. shyt looked like easy money, but the shyt wouldn't process on Topbet :sadcam:.
