Has anyone taken the GRE? Tips/Advice/Suggestions

I took the GRE and studied its theory in grad school. It's highly correlated with IQ. Meaning, you can't just study it and expect to get a higher score. Prepare for a week, but that's it.

Those Kaplan classes are a scam. They don't actually increase scores.

Moral: you can't increase your IQ by studying. You either got it or you don't.

What are you looking to study in graduate school? Because different sections are viewed with much more weight depending on what you're applying to

I know you're not going to believe me, and I'm at work and don't have the sources. But there is very little evidence that those courses work. Yes, you need to prep, but you can't increase your IQ by simply studying. The math shyt on the GRE is basic middle school geometry shyt. You either got it or you don't.

A long time ago. I prepared for a month or so by studying vocab and tricks on the math section. It helped. I took a practice test before prepping and then another right before the GRE and did much better. I had a CD, forgot the name, that went through questions that got progressively harder if I got them right. Again, this was a long time ago (2005) so I don't know if they changed the format or anything.

I'm just saying don't expect a miracle. IQs rarely change. Even with studying

Only to some extent. You're expected to be familiar with the test. But the test is specifically designed so that studying to a great extent will not influence the scores

Fair enough but the intent for me it to pass the test. I'm not tryna get smarter from this test and its prep, just tryna familiarize myself with the test material till i feel confident that i can pass it.

So all in all ya'll recommend buying the book but not taking the courses. Cool, how long did ya'll prep for tho? A month in advance etc

The GRE isn't an IQ test, a GRE score can greatly improve with the proper preparation, it's not a "you either got it or you don't" situation

They are not the same, but they are highly correlated. And the "greatly improved" part is rare

Just buy the books. I prepped on and off for 2 weeks. I say 2 weeks of prep is enough. I'm sure others will disagree.
