I bought it for my ol G in hopes to read it myself, but she hasnt cracked it open yet

I have read Lies My Teacher Told Me which I understand is similar in nature...

I've read lies my teacher told me and its an excellent book. Just downloaded the Howard Zinn audiobook so i'll be tackling that very soon. I'm too busy reading this Marcel Proust right now though.

By far one of my favorite books, and one of my earliest introductions into a full, more radical history of the United States.

Seeing the hostility that the book received, even to this day, really shows just how unhappy a more clear view of history is to those who want to hide it.
While a little lengthy, it's a book I recommend all people read at least once - alongside David Graeber's Debt, Assata by. Assata Shakur, The Autobiography of Malcolm X, and a few others.

Schooling people takes forever; don't bother

just finished the updated version. the last chapter for future generations and the afterword had a glimmer of hope given the tangled mess and cover ups. watch adam curtis's 'can't get out of my head', specifically episode 6, as well

I read it, but the thing I didn't like was that it wasn't very well sourced and by Zinn's own admission sort of gave a distorted perspective on US history. It was a necessary counterbalance, but it's hard for me to point other people to it because I don't know which parts are accurate.

I liked Lies My Teacher Told Me better because it emphasizes the need to look at original documents and I think gives a pretty even-handed approach to the topics it covers, even if it's really just a position statement on how history is taught and not a full history in itself.
