I wouldn't call Ray Charles a c00n or criminal or fukkery. Jamie was also nominated for collateral that same year as best supporting actor. And I don't call what Sidney did in Lilies of the Field any of that either. Louis Gossett Jr in an officer and a gentleman as THE sergeant and the quintessential military guy also wouldn't categorize Morgan in Million Dollar Baby as any of the above either. Just played an ex boxer turned trainer

So thats....2 actors? That's it?

Damn...:to:

For best actor. I'm looking at supporting now. Idi Amin, a great role, but a terrible terrible dictator. And I guess Alonzo counts as "fukker" as a corrupt cop so I didn't include him. And of course Cuba Gooding won for playing a football player but because of who he is and this site, I'm sure he'll be called a c00n just because he's Cuba or he'll be called :flabbynsick:

And as far as actresses go: Whoopi in Ghost played a psychic, Jennifer Hudson played a singer

My exact post from The Locker Room thread:

Louis Gossett Jr. - An Officer & A Gentlemen
Cuba Gooding Jr. - Jerry Maguire
Jamie Foxx - Ray
Whoopi Goldberg - Ghost
Morgan Freeman - Million Dollar Baby
Jennifer Hudson - Dreamgirls

None of those roles have anything to do with slavery, being a criminal, or being a slave.

I never saw "Lillies of the Field," so I can't speak on what type of role Sidney Poitier played in it.

Like I said in the Film Room, Black filmmakers need to put primary focus on creating movies that generate high box-office revenue, because that leads to more opportunities for them in the future. Stop concerning yourself with silly award shows, they're meaningless at this point.

Has a black person who wasn't a slave, criminal or c00n gotten an Oscar before?

OP is trolling.

Cuba wasn't a c00n in the ROLE so I'd count him.

Whoopi wasn't a c00n either in her ROLE

Jennifer Hudson was definitely no c00n.

Morgan Freeman wasn't c00ning in Million Dollar Baby

So you have

Jamie Foxx (Ray)
Louis Gosset (Officer And A Gentleman)
Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls)
Whoopi Goldberg (Ghost)
Cuba Gooding Jr (Jerry Maguire)
Morgan Freeman (Million Dollar Baby)

I saw Lillies Of The Field SEVERAL years ago when I was like 12. I do remember him building a church for some Cac Nuns, and I think he did it for free which is definitely on some c00n bullshyt, but I also remember a scene where a White man tried to chump him and he was like :demonic: , I don't remember the film itself too much so I'll leave that to the Coli to decide.

Forest Whitaker... was committing heinous acts of atrocity against his people, welcoming a Cac into his kingdom , calling him "son" and letting him bang one of his wives :scust: so that was definitely c00n Cuckold shyt.

We already know about Denzel, no awards for Malcom X, Machurian Candiate, Great Debaters, Antwon Fisher, or The Hurricane. But a freed slave who died proudly raising the American Flag and a dirty crooked police officer:snoop:

Halle Berry played Billy Bob's whore:ufdup:

Hattie McDowell....Mammie:snoop:

Mo'Nique... Abusive, ignorant, ratchet, trash:snoop:

Octavia Spencer...The Help:scust:

Lupita Nyongo- Slave:snoop:

I mean he was a man of God breh I don't see that as him c00ning but I know not everyone feels the same about religion. But helping some nuns out because he knew it was the right thing to do sounds like some upstanding shyt to me:yeshrug:

And the thing we're forgetting in all of these that won, regardless of what they won for, they all did outstanding work

Dunno why the type of role matters. A great role is a great role, and MOST truly great roles are for troubled, "criminal" or morally ambiguous characters. Denzel played a GREAT character in Training Day. What does it matter that he was playing a criminal? How many "good" characters did De Niro play? His best roles feature him playing someone who is troubled or a piece of shyt. Mean Streets. Raging Bull. Taxi Driver. Goodfellas.

The Hollywood problem for blacks is that great roles are rarely available. Instead black actors gotta deal with slave or civil rights roles. But brehs...some of those roles can be great too. See: Lupita in 12 Years A Slave. Amazing role/character.

There was NOTHING outstanding about Halle Berry fukking the shyt out of Billy Bob.

Olivia Spencer's performance wasn't anything to write home about either.

The rest of them I agree. Denzel is Denzel. He's amazing in 99% of what he does, hell he was great in Bone Collector and he was a paraplegic who never left the room.

Forest did a great job.

Lupita did a great job

The problem is that there is hardly any BALANCE when it comes to year to year nominations and recognition for quality Black performances. This year is simply a major highlight of that. In a category where up to TEN films could've been nominated, Straight Outta Compton and Creed were SNUBBED. Bryan Cranston got a nomination over Will Smith. Idris was SNUBBED. Ryan Coogler was SNUBBED.

But in 2013 the fukking SLAVERY movie was the hottest thing smoking and that's supposed to be alright. Every few years a movie will drop that depicts us as emasculated, ignorant, thuggish, or subservient (or in Precious's case all 4) and its held up as a shining example of diversity in cinema when Cacs go gaga over it. Every single ONE of those black winners (except perhaps Jamie Foxx, Louis Gosset, and Jennifer Hudson, Morgan Freeman) were negative, subservient, or dehumanized.

I liked Octavia breh...and I forgot about Halle. I didn't even fukk with that movie as a whole so I really don't even remember her performance. In fact, I'm trying to think of something where Halle blew me away in.

And I'm not disagreeing with you on the other stuff breh, I'm just always a fan of giving props where props are due and regardless of what the role is, if you hit a home run you hit a home run. We can discuss the merits of the role and the type of roles etc but talent is talent. And I haven't seen Trumbo yet so I can't speak on that. But I was with a friend of mine yesterday and he wasn't blown away by Will and thought he was just okay so in his mind, Will didn't get snubbed. He felt Jason Mitchell was the true snub and that I agreed with 110%

I guess I should get around to watching Straight Outta Compton. As someone who hasn't seen the film, it seems like people wanted it to be nominated because it was the only prominent black film they could remember coming out this year. I heard the dude that played Eazy-E was good though.

I honestly though Ryan Coogler not being nominated for Best Director was a more egregious snub.
