Adam Driver ain’t committing 11-12 years of his life playing a supporting character in a television series at this point in his career.
Yep as someone who wants to see black actors get to play complex characters this is a HORRIBLE choice just from the optics.
If the series wanted to have a black character have an expanded role then the character of Dean Thomas was right there. J.K. Rowling originally intended for him to have a bigger role in the book series but had to cut down his development in favor of Neville Longbottom. Or Hell they could’ve done what they did for the play and make Hermione black. But Severus fukking Snape as a black man is just too rife with harmful stereotypes.

Yeahhhh, the optics are horrendous and are not gonna get any better the longer the series goes on and the deeper you get to delve into Snape’s backstory to see all the unfortunate implications and scenarios— which were already bad when the character was WHITE — play out with a new perspective.
I don’t mind them making the move to have a black character of prominence, but they should’ve either made Hermione black like the plays, or expanded the roles of of existing black characters like Dean, that one girl on the Quidditch team, Theodor Knott, ect. Making the most polarizing character in the story Black just seems…
