I agree to an extent but you used a terrible example. He worked hard at running a corner store, if he didn't strive to reach higher levels of success than how is that failure?

Now if you said he tried to open multiple corner store chains or what have you and failed then I agree.

I hate when people say if you work hard you will be successful. My Uncle Emil owned a corner grocery store and worked 14 to 16 hours a day all his life. He never succeeded in getting rich, but he did get old. This didn't take any great amount of insight on my part, just good eyesight. I could see, with my own eyes, the hours and effort my uncle put in every day, and I could also see that it never got him anywhere.

Everyone has an Uncle Emil. Of course, your Uncle Emil may be a cousin, a brother, or perhaps your father someone who has worked very hard over the years, kept his nose to the grindstone, yet never achieved any great degree of success.
Everyone has a different definition of success.
Maybe being his own boss was a success in his eyes. Owning an independent business takes a lot of hard work.
To maintain that business, he had to work hard. Or else, the business would have closed, and he would have to work for someone else and all the stuff that goes with working under someone.

Folks like to spread cliches and feel good generic quotes that are not as accurate or practical than just sounding good
hard work +Preparation+Opportunity+luck = success
applied knowledge is power, not knowledge

My parents taught me and my siblings a variation of the same message from Mike Rowe's don't follow your passion video
