It could be. There's also a strong undertone of class condescension in there, too. In any case, everywhere isn't the US. The Latin part of the hemisphere never had a Black Power movement, so the expectations are different and you move different, whether it's inadvertent casual ignorance or outright racism. Running off full tilt at every little thing is letting them have a chain on your neck to yank whenever they feel like it. If you want to give a quick object lesson you say "thanks, I enjoy being who I am...I have an American-born Mexican friend back home, if I closed my eyes your Spanish would sound almost as good as his", and continue the interview without missing a beat.
