It doesn't just apply to race. Here in Europe, especially continental, people identify as half Spanish, French, Portuguese etc. all the time. Hell, I know half German/Dutch people and they're closer ethnically speaking than some of the various African tribes subjected to slavery.
She used 'Black' to refer to African-American as an ethnicity because colloquially speaking, AA and Black is interchangeable. Poor wording at best, but from context it's pretty easy to understand what she meant...
i dig
but peep this
my issue is - at least here in the States - there is a subtle racism or prejudice that within our society where even among other "black" cultures a differentiation is made between someone that is black and american as opposed to black- african, caribbean or latino
and there is a view that black american is somehow separate from those "others"
now i understand in Europe someone can claim they are Irish and Italian or Spanish and Dutch etc and they may differentiate themselves based on that
but here in the States EACH one of those are WHITE - and no matter what their whiteness is never in dispute
no differentiation in whiteness is part of the society here and legally, socially and culturally that Whiteness comes way before their being Italian or German or Spanish and it is viewed ABOVE being black - "blackness" is just blackness no matter the origin - if a differntiation is made its because its goal is to be used to the detriment of the "black" you are - lightskinned or dark skinned - english speaking or not english speaking - african or latino.
black americans have been pitted against each other in color of our skin, in ethincity and nationality in this country - as a way to control and often times disenfranchise us
its part of the culture here - and its disturbing to see someone who claims to represent a celebration of the diaspora of black people then use the same terms to differentiate themselves in identifying who they are - that those who did not like black people used to fukk up black folk mentally by saying someone was "different" AND less than - if they werent completely of "white" parentage -
at lease in the context of being here in the US - it just seems like its giving more validity in viewing blackness as an "other" - if we are all black - then lets be all black because media wise whites dont see a difference as us being Somali or Nigerian or Brazillian or American - when it comes down to it we are all just "black"
so saying she is Half Somali and Half "black" is on some shyt that really as far as the culture doesnt mean a damn thing - because she is black ever before she is Somali or Haitian or Jamaican ...
AND she grew up ignorant of her fathers family - so its really kinda boutique almost a "gimmick" to claim being "Somali" - she didnt grow up Somali at all and only found out about the other part of her parentage as an adult and has recently embraced it
if she had Never run into those folk in San Fran - she would regard herself as "black" ...you wouldnt look at her and say "oh shes obviously half Somali ....."
