Yes he is. People who think this is a silly notion are ignorant of Hakeem's career and NBA history. They don't know what type of monster Hakeem was.
Hakeem is the most complete center in history and probably the most underrated player of all time. He was legitimately a top 5 offensive player of the 80's and 90's and was arguably the GOAT defensive player ever.
He's top 1 in blocks all time and top 10 in steals (which is ridiculous for a center). He dominated all statistical categories.
Hakeem was a clutch performer. He dominated all the elite centers of the 90's which was the greatest era for centers in NBA history. People talk about 2 championships but what they don't tell you is Hakeem played for a very dysfunctional franchise for most of his prime. Hakeem in the mid-90's wasn't even prime Hakeem. This guy took the Rockets to the NBA finals in 86 with Ralph Sampson, defeating one of the greatest teams of all time in the Show time Lakers in just 5 games. The only thing that stopped that Rockets team from being a major consistent force was Sampson's injuries.
Hakeem wasted his prime from 87-93 on mediocre Rockets teams. Hakeem led his team in averaging 4/5 categories for a record 9 different seasons, 8 straight seasons from 1985/86 to 1992/93. Unlike a certain Lebron, he didn't bail out on his squad and go and join a top 5 player to win 2 titles. He stayed and persevered.
In the 94 playoffs, this guy led his team in all 5 statistical categories throughout the ENTIRE playoffs. The only player in NBA history to do so. He was the best scorer, passer, ball stealer, rebounder, shot blocker in addition to playing all time great defense on all time great centers.
In the 94 playoffs, Hakeem had arguably the worst supporting cast in NBA history and led them to a championship. Unlike Lebron, he didn't have a superstar averaging 25ppg throughout the playoffs by his side. Just look at some of the numbers his teammates averaged in that title run:
Playoff Statistics
29-11-4 on 52% FG - 80% FT - Hakeem Olajuwon
14-4-4 on 38% FG - 69% FT - Vernon Maxwell
12-6-4 on 43% FG - 77% FT - Robert Horry
11-10-2 on 57% FG - 57% FT - Otis Thorpe
11-2-4 on 46% FG - 81% FT - Kenny Smith
This was the lowest scoring supporting cast among Championship teams in NBA history.
Hakeem is absolutely as good if not better than Lebron , especially if you factor in defense. In terms of ability, he's legit a top 3-4 talent all time along with the likes of Jordan, Wilt and Lebron. Lebron just has more hype and media attention around him.
If Hakeem wasn't competing in the same era as the GOAT and if he had an American sounding name, he'll have at least 4-5 MVP's. Especially If Kareem could have 6 MVP's for some of the seasons he had in the 70's.
