ABOUT THE FILM

The Creole Pig: Haiti’s Great Loss recounts the story of a vital, resilient animal central to Haitian life for generations. Indigenous to Haiti, the Creole pig was a critical resource for peasant farmers. However, in the 1980s, an outbreak of swine flu, prompted USAID and the Haitian government to exterminate the entire population of Creole pigs. This drastic measure delivered a devastating economic blow to an already struggling nation.

The documentary explores how this mass culling accelerated Haiti’s economic decline while examining the political and social fallout. Featuring interviews with farmers, economists, educators, and political analysts, the film delves into Haiti’s history and politics to unpack the profound impact of this tragic event.

EXCLUSIVE: Writer Mike Gauyo (Insecure, Ginny & Georgia) and Coverfly have announced the 2025 class of the Black Boy Writes & Black Girl Writes Mentorship Initiative, a talent incubator for up-and-coming Black writers.

The new cohort of 10 mentees came together following a global search for emerging storytellers across the Black diaspora. Each writer will have access to monthly roundtables with established writers/industry leaders; writing workshops to fine-tune their scripts and prepare them for fellowships, generals, and staffing opportunities; and general meetings with networks and production companies. Participants will also each receive the latest edition of Final Draft’s screenwriting software, at the end of the year having the opportunity to be read by Gauyo’s agents at Culture Creative and managers at M88 for representation consideration

Note from the editor: In the past year, many untrue stories have been told about Haitian-Americans living in Springfield, Ohio. We started this series, Haitians in the Heartland, at the Eichelberger Center for Community Voices at WYSO to help our listeners and readers better understand the Haitian diaspora in southwest Ohio and beyond and to allow Haitian-Americans to tell their own stories.
This series results from six months of close collaboration with a group of Springfield residents from Haiti. We originally got to know our producers because they were involved in an internet radio station in Springfield called
New Diaspora Live. They wanted to collaborate with us to share their stories with a broader audience. In the first episode, you'll meet three of our storytellers: Miguelito Jerome, Virginelle Jerome, and Luckens Merzius. Miguelito and Virginelle are married.
