1. Never even thought about how remittances benefit DR too.

2. I must be misunderstanding it, at least I hope I am. Is it saying that Haitians account for 10 billion of the remittances that DR gets? Or that DR gets about 10bil in remittances and Haitians account for some of that?

3. What do you brehs do to contribute? I send some bread back for a few relatives over there. I donate monthly to a school-based charity. But if we being real, never seems like much (even tho I know a little goes a long way)

Article quotes him as saying that DR ends up getting about 1.4 of the $4 billion that is sent to Haiti.
And that because of the size of the diaspora in DR, that people sending money to them there, that it makes up an (unknown) % of the $10 billion in remittances that Dom Rep gets. It's written weirdly in the article.

I had an old thread about global remittance numbers, and the numbers he's using are roughly what the World Bank stats were from the year measured. 2nd page has the graph

Since the time we were kids, my Dad sent money down. He built (retirement) property down there that he didn't live to enjoy, and relatives manage it and rent it out for income. Now we give money and supplies for Mom to distribute to family, and when churches or relatives are sending shipments down we buy and load barrels of what is most needed.
Currently we donate resources to churches that are helping "Moun Biden" adjust to life here.

Same with my dad. He passed last year, so me and my siblings have been continuing that. Crazy shyt is (and unfortunately) I've only met this particular set of family once. But my siblings (who are older) have met them multiples, most on visits while they were kids.

My mom and her sisters did that back in the day, but something happened to where a cat ran off with their money. Happened so long ago, don't remember all the particulars. TBH, even if they had completed the property I doubt they would've stayed or visited themselves outside of 1 sister. I remember on a family trip to Petit Goave, one of my aunties was so distraught (couldn't tell if it was due to past trauma or being stuck up), she didn't even wanna visit some of her old stomping grounds, out right refused/cried a few times.

I left the church pretty early on, I'm agnostic/atheist. Rest of my siblings are still believers, but none of them are church goers. So I'm definitely missing out on those connections. Right now I just tag along (or donate) if my auntie/uncle are doing church missions back in Haiti.

Sucks cause the writing is on the wall that as they age, I'm gonna lose more and more of that connection...unless I actively counteract it.
