THROWDOWN TUESDAYS

which would you say was the #3 American promotion of the early '90s?

or higher than 3rd, if youre willing to take it there.

I grew up in the Sip, so we got Memphis (USWA) Wrestling all the time. Lance Russell, Dave Brown and Corey Maclin (RIP) were dope. Channel 5. They had some great promos and good angles, but the wrestling was so trash at times.

I'm from Memphis (raised, not born). Went to hella shows at TV5 and the MidSouth Coliseum.

UWF was looked at as the #3 company in wrestling (taking AWA's spot) for about 2 years before being bought by WCW.
None of the other ones were ever seen as being more than a regional company.
Eastern Championship Wrestling didn't become a legit #3 until after Heyman took over and changed the name to Extreme Championship Wrestling.

I used to watch GWF on ESPN when i was a lil kid.

same here. my GWF vote may be a bit biased. GWF was just as much apart of my early childhood as WCW & WWF.

ESPN had it on lock after school. monster jam @ 3:30 and GWF at 4 o'clock.

ive been binging off the early episodes on youtube, to the point where ive been buying swiss rolls to go along with it. whether it be the lil debbies or the dollar store jawns - which are low-key better.

GWF for me, but I liked USWA a lot as well. Both used a lot of the same talent and had similar vibes. GWF basically spun out World Class/USWA Texas.

Patriot was up there with Hogan, Sting, Warrior and Luger for me as a kid and the Cartel stable/angle had me hooked. So did Eddie Gilbert and the Dark Patriot stuff. Plus you had Jerry Lynn and Sean Waltman giving us classics.

Never saw any of the other ones but I remember they all got decent coverage in the Apter mags.

yea same here. patriot was right up there with Hogan, sting, warrior & the legion of doom for me too. and I had the handsome stranger not far behind them.
I didn't have luger in that mix, cuz he was usually heel or tweener back then.

sidenote: I had no clue buff bagwell was the handsome stranger until years later.

and yea, the lightweight division doesn't get its credit.

With that clarification I would have to say USWA was probably the best of the bunch at that point int time.

I basically knew the USWA because the GWF would give them airtime on ESPN.
but other than that, I really didn't see much of their stuff.

didn't get smokey mountain up here at all, but I used to read about it in the magazines.

looks like the poll is gonna come down to those two.

Dope idea for a thread. That's some memories right there, bruh.

I'm in Canada, early 90's I had no way of seeing any of 'em, but I had read about 'em in PWI or some shyt. Just going by that coverage it seemed like SMW was probably No. 3 so that's how I voted here.

BUT, without getting too far off topic ... in '95 our family moved into a house that had an old satellite dish in the backyard, we used that to pick up some random U.S. channel that had a different promotion's wrestling on each weeknight (ECW, USWA, SMW, something called Deep South Wrestling, and one other that I can't remember). I thought both SMW and USWA were dope even if they were low budget and corny as hell. :heh:

Seems to me that USWA ring in their TV studio was like 10 x 10 feet, didn't look too level either. Dudes couldn't do shyt in there work-wise. :pachaha:
They definitely went heavy on mic work. Lawler seemed like he showed up in every segment of every episode. Same thing for Cornette in SMW.
