@O.G.B a 2 chamber system. put the rat in the first chamber, close the outside chamber, then open the inside slide for the snake to eat.
Good idea, but then you have the problem that the snake stays in the outside chamber after he eats and he's there when you open it for the next feeding, or if you try to close the chambers, the snake gets smushed in between. Maybe just put like a chute and drop the dead mouse in. Just like an icemaker on a refrigerator has two activated flaps and when activated, ice drops from the first flap into the chute, the first flap closes, and then the second opens.

have an option to put the food in either chamber at any time. your idea will work fine too.
