Due to recent events I figured this would be a good time to settle some things with facts rather than opinions concerning gun ownership.

Many posters, pro and anti-gun, post various and sundry arguments, but this is getting out of hand with the amount of disinformation flowing, so, with that said, here's what's good in New Jersey.....

If you want to obtain a permit to carry in New Jersey, you must submit an application along with the following:

  • 3 good character endorsements
  • 4 passport size photos
  • Training and marksmanship scores (70% or better)
  • Familiarity with safe handling and use of handguns
  • Demonstrated justifiable need
  • Approval by the chief of police
  • Final approval from a county superior court judge
What is justifiable need?

New Jersey defines justifiable need as “an urgent necessity for self-protection as evidenced by specific threats or previous attacks which demonstrate a special danger in the applicant’s life that cannot be avoided by means other than by issuance of a permit to carry a handgun.” (2C: 58-4)

When I bought my Glock 17, I ordered it from an online dealer. They couldn’t ship to my house, and could only ship to an FFL dealer. My local gun range is my FFL dealer. Once it arrived to the range, they sent an email and said it was ready to pick up. I went, filled out my background check, passed it in like 5 minutes, paid my FFL transfer fee ($40), and walked out with my shyt. :yeshrug:

In Texas you don’t need a permit to purchase a firearm if you’re of legal age, have valid ID, don’t have a felony, or a domestic violence charge, and you don’t need a license to carry.

MD is horrible for handguns.

Unless otherwise exempt, as of October 1, 2013, a Maryland resident must possess a valid Handgun Qualification License before he/she may purchase, rent, or receive a handgun. Details on exemptions may be found below. You do not need a Handgun Qualification License to own a gun you already have. The Handgun Qualification License is only needed for purchasing, transferring, or renting a regulated firearm after October 1, 2013.

That sucks. You can’t even have certain types of knives in NJ. Certain companies won’t ship flipper knives there. They really want SQUARE nikkas walking around naked in NJ-NY.

only a couple in my state
- if i'm selling someone a gun and they tell me they're a drug user/felon/woman beater/etc. i'm not allowed to do the sale
- i'm not allowed to shoot while riding a snowmobile/carry at schools without a permit
the permit is $5/shall issue and doesn't do anything else, it's just to be able to carry in other states

And what is the problem with that?
That one form they fill out checks your criminal history, if you've had any mental issues or domestic violence charges and if you have charges pending.
Also what the people are buying are not "assault" rifles.

What more would you propose?
