I'll also add the type of music a lot of these newer singers and rappers listened to growing up. Artist from the late 80s-late 90s grew up listening to 60s, 70s and early 80s soul/r&b and early hip hop. That type of music wasn't all about gang banging, drugs, clubbing, etc. Now we know those artist performing those songs in the 60s-80s were straight deviants but it wasn't reflected in their music.

A lot of these artists now were children and adolescents in the 90s and 2000s. What were they listening to? West coast gangster rap (Death Row, Ruthless, etc), pimping/playa/mackin rap (Too Short, Suga Free, a lot of Bay Area, etc) East coast thug rap (Mobb Deep, CNN), Mafioso rap (It Was Written era Nas, Raekwon, AZ, etc) and bling bling rap (Cash Money, Puffy). Earlier artists grew up listening to singers sing about love, romance, etc. Artist now grew up listening to gangster music, pimping and bling bling raps.

Not enough balance with what people listen to which is by design.
