Ruben Guerrero: 'Run Time' Thurman Faces Real Mexican
Posted by: Rick Reeno on 1/15/2015

By Rick Reeno

Ruben Guerrero, father and trainer of former multi-division champion Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero (32-2-1, 18KOs), believes his son will overwhelm WBA interim-welterweight champion Keith "One Time" Thurman (24-0, 21KOs) in the main event of Al Haymon's debut edition of 'Premier Boxing Champions' on NBC.

The fight is taking place on March 7th from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

"We just got back from ‎New York. At the press conference everything went great. We are really excited to be fighting this one on NBC and it's gonna be great for boxing," Ruben stated to BoxingScene.com.

Thurman has a deadly reputation in the welterweight division. But, Ruben is less than impressed. Ruben was very disappointed with Thurman's decision win over Leonard Bundu last month in Las Vegas.

"You know man, Robert fights anyone...look at his record. This is the fight we wanted and the fight that our team delivered. He is very excited. Robert is gonna take this kid into deep waters. ‎We can't wait. We are gonna show this guy what a real Mexican warrior is all about. He better be ready," Ruben said.

"Let me tell you something, I've only seen him a few times but he should change his name to 'Run Time' and stop calling himself 'One Time' - because that Vato was running for his life [with Bundu]. The crowd was booing. People pay good money to go to fights to see chingasos and that's what he's gonna find out prime time live on NBC baby, March 7."

Guerrero's co-manager, Bob Santos, added: "I kept hearing so much hype about this guy. At the weigh-in [for Bundu], Thurman was on stage and told the entire world that he would be the man to knock Floyd Mayweather out. So I watched his fight the following day - and he had a guy in the ring with him who can't crack an egg and looked older than Mayweather Sr, and Thurman was running all over the ring from this guy. Robert is no 40-year-old boxer who fought domestic competition overseas. Robert is a world class fighter. The Thurman's hype is going to end on March 7th."

Robert Guerrero to face ‘unique’ challenge in Keith Thurman
January 15, 2015

NEW YORK – Former two-division titleholder Robert Guerrero was counting his blessings during a Wednesday press conference at the NBC studios, where it was announced that THE RING’s No. 8-rated welterweight would face No. 7-rated Keith Thurman on March 7 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Thurman-Guerrero is part of NBC’s new boxing series titled, “Premier Boxing Champions” (“PBC on NBC”) in accordance with a multi-year deal between the network and adviser Al Haymon, whose inaugural event will air at 9:00 p.m. ET on March 7 as a doubleheader, matching RING No. 6-rated junior welterweight Adrien Broner opposite John Molina.

A second show on April 11 will feature IBF junior welterweight titleholder Lamont Peterson opposite RING champion Danny Garcia in a 143-pound bout potentially at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

The 31-year-old Guerrero (32-2-1, 18 knockouts) appeared with Thurman (24-0, 21 KOs) and the other fighters on a stage alongside legendary Hall-of-Famers, Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns and Roberto Duran.

“It’s amazing to see guys like Duran, Hearns and Sugar Ray Leonard up there,” said Guerrero. “It’s amazing now, today, to be in the right thing and the right time. This is going to be great, not just for myself but for all of boxing.”

Guerrero was last in action for a hard-fought unanimous decision over Japan’s Yoshihiro Kamegai in June to rebound from a unanimous decision loss to RING 147-pound champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. in May 2013. Thurman, 26, is coming off last month’s shutout unanimous decision over previously undefeated Leonard Bundu.

“It’s a unique fight with Thurman but there is something unique about every fighter. With Thurman, you just have a guy who has been getting knockouts in some great fights,” said Guerrero. “He’s got great punching power and good foot movement and great hand speed. There is so much that he brings to the table that you’ve just got to be ready for him.”

Had it not been for a left shoulder injury suffered since his victory over Julio Diaz last April, Thurman said his plan was to have been more active than just the one fight in 2014.

Guerrero had turned down a previous offer to face Thurman, saying the younger man had not yet established himself as a big name.

“This was most definitely an opportunity that I couldn’t pass up. Thurman has been climbing the ladder and doing his thing, so it’s time for him to get that shot and I’m going to be right there to give it to him,” said Guerrero.

“Al [Haymon] came to me and proposed this fight to me and without thinking twice, I said, ‘Let’s do it.’ It’s a fight that everyone wants to see and he’s been out there saying that everyone is ducking him. So I know what that feels like, because early on in my career, everyone was ducking me, so it’s time to give him that shot and it’s well-deserved.”

A southpaw, Guerrero had won 15 straight fights, nine by knockout before losing to Mayweather.

“I’m very strong as a southpaw and I’ve been working on a lot of stuff, being able to change up some things in the ring. I’ve gone back and I’ve looked at the Mayweather fight and the fight with Kamegai,” said Guerrero.

“So we’re assessing the fights. The one thing that can happen is that getting caught into certain styles can become a habit, so I’ve been changing some things in the gym. I’m excited to get back into that ring.”

Guerrero will be in his fifth 147-pound fight against Thurman after making his division debut against Selcuk Aydin in July of 2012.

“A lot of people don’t realize that I came up from 135 pounds straight to 147, so it takes time for you to build into that after jumping to weight classes, especially after starting my pro career at 122 pounds. It’s a long road, climbing that ladder,” said Guerrero.

“So we’ll find out who will be the bigger guy, physically, when we get into the ring. In my past few fights, I think that I’ve been the bigger guy. I’m seriously climbing up in weight and now, I’m a full-fledged 147-pounder. Now it’s time to take care of business.”

In March of 2010, Guerrero chose to pull out of a scheduled clash with Michael Katsidis in order to be with his wife, Casey Guerrero, during her recovery from a bone-marrow transplant. At ringside for Guerrero’s unanimous decision over Selcuk Aydin in July 2012 were Casey and her donor, Katharina Zech, of Germany, whom the Guerrero’s met for the first time earlier that year.

Robert Guerrero’s devotion to his wife and family were recognized when he received the “Bill Crawford Award for Courage in the Face of Adversity” from the Boxing Writers Association of America in 2011.

“All of that hard work, all of that grind, all of that adversity gets you here,” said Guerrero, who followed up the win over Aydin with a unanimous decision over two-time titleholder Andre Berto in November 2012. “Like they say, when you’re patient, things come. Great things come.”

Keith Thurman: ‘I’m the toughest challenge to date for Robert Guerrero’
January 15, 2015

NEW YORK – RING No. 7-ranked welterweight Keith Thurman believes relative inactivity “could be a factor” in his favor against RING No. 8-rated Robert Guerrero when they meet on March 7 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

A former two-division titlist, Guerrero (32-2-1, 18 knockouts), 31, was last in action for a hard-fought unanimous decision over Japan’s Yoshihiro Kamegai in June to rebound from a unanimous decision loss to RING 147-pound champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. in May 2013.

Meanwhile, Thurman (24-0, 21 KOs), 26, is coming off last month’s shutout unanimous decision over previously undefeated Leonard Bundu, representing his second fight of 2014 and his fifth over the course of the past two years.

Nicknamed “One Time,” Thurman had previously scored his third straight stoppage win in April in the third round over two-time lightweight titleholder Julio Diaz. Thurman had stopped 11 of his past 12 opponents.

“It could be a factor, especially going up against a guy like myself. You know, I’m definitely not your average fighter,” said Thurman, who was limited during 2014 due to a left shoulder injury suffered in his victory over Diaz.

“Everything that I do in the ring is above average, from the movement to the defense to the power, even the speed. I wouldn’t say that I’m the fastest guy out there but I would definitely say that I’m above average. So, [Guerrero] definitely needs to bring his A-game. He needs to come well-prepared for battle on March 7.”

Thurman-Guerrero was announced during a Wednesday press conference at the NBC studios as part of NBC’s new boxing series titled, “Premier Boxing Champions” (“PBC on NBC”) in accordance with a multi-year deal between the network and adviser Al Haymon. The inaugural PBC event will air at 9:00 p.m. ET on March 7 and will also feature RING No. 6-rated junior welterweight Adrien Broner opposite John Molina.

A second show on April 11 will feature IBF junior welterweight titleholder Lamont Peterson opposite RING champion Danny Garcia in a 143-pound bout potentially at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

During the announcement, Thurman, Guerrero and the other fighters stood on a stage alongside legendary Hall-of-Famers, Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns and Roberto Duran.

Thurman does not believe Guerrero has faced his combination of youth, power and athleticism in the ring, even though Guerrero has fought Mayweather, 37.

“Floyd doesn’t have the power that I do. Now Floyd doesn’t have the youth but you can’t tell with the way that he moves around the ring on his legs. So for the most part, I do believe that I’m the toughest challenger to date for Robert Guerrero,” said Thurman, a resident of Clearwater, Fla.

“Floyd was maybe the toughest so far but Guerrero could go into that fight with the confidence that he wasn’t going to get knocked out. Here in this fight, he knows in the back of his head and his whole team and everybody in his whole camp has to know that Keith ‘One Time’ Thurman has the ability to put him out at any given second during any given round and at any moment in time.”

Guerrero will be in his fifth 147-pound fight against Thurman after making his division debut with a unanimous decision victory over Selcuk Aydin in July of 2012.

“A lot of people don’t realize that I came up from 135 pounds straight to 147,” said Guerrero. “So it takes time for you to build into that after jumping to weight classes, especially after starting my pro career at 122 pounds. It’s a long road, climbing that ladder.”

Thurman believes he will have an advantage due to his being a welterweight for much longer than Guerrero.

“I’m definitely the bigger fighter,” said Thurman. “Physically and mentally, I’m a full-fledged welterweight and he’s moved up into the welterweight division.”

Although Guerrero had turned down a previous offer to face Thurman, claiming the younger man had not yet established himself as a big name, he said their upcoming clash is “well-deserved” on the part of Thurman.

“At the end of the day, fighters can say whatever and, truth to be told, every fighter is an entrepreneur. We’re all businessmen and the sport of boxing is a sport and a business as well, so I’m not mad at the way that Guerrero wanted to conduct his business. They can’t force your hand to sign on the dotted line,” said Thurman of Guerrero, a southpaw who had won 15 straight fights, nine by knockout before losing to Mayweather.

“But he obviously waited long enough and due to my activity and postponing the matchmaking of this fight, we’re now at the opportunity where he’s satisfied with what they’re offering him. I was always satisfied on my end, so at any time in my career, I was prepared to fight Robert ‘The Ghost’ Guerrero. But like I said, on March 7, it is going down. He’s satisfied; I’m satisfied. So we’re hear now and I’m looking forward to a great night of boxing on NBC on March 7 at the MGM Grand.”

"At the end of the day, all I can say is be careful what you ask for 'cause when you get it, what you gonna do with it...I'm happy I got an opponent that's willing to give back feedback...completely different fighter than Maidana...I'm going to exploit everything on March 7th...Fireworks, Independence Day, this fight don't go the distance," stated three-division former world champion Adrien Broner

I'm a big fan of Thurman and Broner, but I gotta keep it trill.

Not really hyped for that card.

I mean I like seeing Guerrero getting his ass kicked too, but I don't even think he does much for #Thurminators at this point. He's a step up from Diaz and Bundu, but not by much. Thurman should be fighting guys like Brook, Chino, Porter. etc....Not nikkas that are going life and death with Ippo.

I feel like Molina is a step down from Taylor for #Bandcamp. That fight doesn't do much for Broner either. Soto or Figeroua were definitely better fights.

I'll still watch it though, because I think the fights will be entertaining.
You're missing the big picture. Those fights are in store for the PPVs. This is to get casual fans knowledgeable. Then to have discounted advertisement on NBC is huge. If they promote these upcoming matches during the Super Bowl. :banderas::lawd::blessed:

I get all that breh. It's a good look for boxing. That still doesn't mean I have to be hyped up for those bouts. I mean I'll watch it, cuz they should be entertaining fights, but that's about it.

It's not for you. PPV is for you. This series is for casual who will potentially pay for those PPVs too.
Boxing loss people due to Canelo vs Angulo on PPV. That's a free fight. People say Haymon is bad for boxing but he sees the bigger picture. Got to take one step back to take two steps forward.

I'm a hardcore boxing fan breh.

Any boxing bout that is being televised is for me. :what: I'm sure others in here would agree with that statement.

I'm not shytting on Haymon. I get he's trying to do big things in 2015. That still doesn't mean I have to like every single bout he makes.

You're missing the point. This is to recapture casual fans by the boatload and not just subscribers to Showtime. Expand the market for PPV sales.
