fukk Aaron Boone

This idiot cares more about not hurting players feelings than winning. No excuse for Williams bum ass to still be the closer over Weaver.
This is not on Boone. If Weaver closes, the entire pen is compromised and Williams might as well be off the team. They have to try to get him right. If it only takes a month for a top 2 closer to lose it completely (Clase fukking up too), then what are we gonna do when weaver struggles?

He needs 2 weeks in Tampa away from everybody right now.

He was supposed to be one of the best closers in the game so you can’t bail on him after 1-2 weeks, but it’s over a month now and he’s only getting worse. He came into this game with a 2.33 WHIP and allowed 3 more baserunners and 3 more runs without getting an out. His ERA is north of 11 now. You can’t justify putting the guy into anything beyond mop up duty in the 9th where it’s at least a 7-8 run margin at this point. He can’t find the zone, can’t miss anyone’s bats, and looks broken mentally. You can’t keep this guy as the closer any more than you could’ve kept Chapman as the closer by mid 2022. If he quits on the team as a result or that means the end of his tenure here, then good riddance. Right now he’s the single worst pitcher in baseball. You can’t trust him to close games going forward.

You let him try to figure it out in some low leverage situations until he shows he's deserving of closing again.

Continuing to put him out there in the 9th isn't doing Williams or the team any favors.

I think this move is above Boone’s pay grade tbh, he’s gonna take all the hits but if Cashman still wants Devin to be the closer, he’s gonna be the closer :francis:

And we all know how stubborn Cashman is :francis::francis:
*thinks about Aaron hicks still playing in 2023, Verdugo starting all last year, and Holmes as the closer all the way into September last year :shaq2:*

If you put him in a game up 8, he might give up 9.

If you put him in a game down 8. He might give up 9.

The concerning thing is that tonight might have been the first game he botched that would be considered a high leverage situation. All his other crap outings were games where he screwed up low leverage situations. Thats why he needs time away to figure it out mentally (because this isn’t anything health related). This isn’t like say DJ who’s washed or Stroman who was always inconsistent. This is historical. The best thing they can do is see if he gets his mind right because the consequences of him figuring it out elsewhere will cost us.

Did Cashman & Boone not see this guy get his soul taken in the playoffs last year
Yeah, this and the Brewers being willing to trade him should have been a red flag. The Brewers being willing to trade the best closer in the game for Nestor Cortez and a throwaway prospect should have been fishy to Cashman but he did it anyway. lol
