Controversy surrounded Popovich during the 1996–97 NBA season when he fired Bob Hill 18 games into his third season as Spurs head coach. Hill had posted a combined 121–43 record in his first two seasons with the team. Popovich took over as head coach on the same day David Robinson joined the lineup for the first time that season, after missing time due to injury.

Phil has always taken a team that is ready to win and brought them over the hump. He gets credit for winning when he should. His record isn't flawless however, usually as soon as there is serious turmoil the team falters or he jets.

So its not exactly like Pop has been coaching a scrub team his whole tenure. Let's see how he does without Duncan before drawing conclusions. If he retires when Duncan does, well, that'll be convenient now wouldn't it?
