Penny Hardaway is probably the one that hurt me the most, I thought he was gonna change the game. Was the first college player I tried to watch any chance I could get..
Did he tear his Achilles?
As a kid, I patterned my game after Penny's.
He had every skill.Ball handling, sick J, passing, defense, post game, hops, and he used both hands well.
I was living in Los Angeles at the time, but my uncle would always call me from NY and give me pointers on the game. He's one of those basketball fundamentalist/purist types.Coched AAU and trained with the Lakers back in the 80's.
The player that he told me to study if I wanted to work on my all around game and get my skills right was Pete Maravich. He actually sent me that Pistol Pete basketball drill series
.shyt had me feeling clairvoyant out there on the court.
But when Penny first hit the scene, my uncle was raving about him.He just hit me on the horn one day like "This new boy Anfernee Hardaway, you keep a eye on him, and watch how he plays"
Penny wasn't a super athlete type.He was a very good athlete, but he was cerebral, to.He carried himself with composure and never got rattled. His game was never out of control....if I had to use a word to describe his game, I'd say "graceful" nh....Damn shame he couldn't stay injury free
