You're missing the point...that box is separate and you still have to select your RACE. The average Hispanic should be checking off both the white and native boxes if they wanted to be accurate but I don't think the concept of "mestizo" is well understood by Americans. Most forms are the same way, and on the future census it will be offered the same way like it is now, as a separate question for ethnicity but not race.
