OP, mid 2000 I had a VERY similar experience at Sarit centre, Westlands, the first shopping mall in this country called Kenya. I DIDN'T even know what was up til I thought about the episode days later! Am I an innocent MOFO or just slow as some insist? A Tutsi did smth similar a yr later and I was again clueless.
If it matters I had on a grey dress shirt and charcoal grey pinstripe pants. Anyway I was on the 2nd floor and a Kenyan Asian, a Pakistani Ismaili stops me asking the way to a smaller mall, ABC place, some 4 km away.
Its on the same road basically you CAN'T get lost. He asks again and wants me to show him the way! I look at him sideways and keep it moving.
