So while I agree..they have a massive amount of potential material to work from, which is great. Its hard to tell clear stories and develop meaningful characters for TV when there are so many disjointed stories.
I feel like the characters are becoming more and more disposable as they build on the whole Westeros mythology. Some people may not care, but I feel like that hurts the show and makes it feel like I'm watching The Young and The Restless...
