Bryan is playing a GOATsso style character too and you see the marks are eating it up. Same with female playfighter Becky Lynch. People want characters not just random first name vs. last name meaningless playfights.
I touched on this in another thread, but pure athleticism doesn't mean shyt if there's no backstory behind it or if the person can't cut a promo unless it's heavily scripted. Hunter is one of my best friends in life, but the way people get neutered on the main roster is pretty brutal. Whether it's giving them one name, making them rely on heavily scripted promos, or just throwing them out there expecting the audience to care, it seems like they're expecting the talent to swim with a 25 pound weights on their ankles. Take a look at the WWE Main Roster for Raw and Smackdown; there are four individuals (excluding The Undertaker and Kane) with actual gimmicks:
Elias: Great character who's able to draw heat and cut a promo, but WWE needs to shyt or get off the pot with him. If I had the book, he'd at least have the IC strap
Bray Wyatt: Love the character and can cut a promo but it's been neutered by horrific booking to the point he'll never fully recover
Goldust: Career's winding down and the character is not near what it once was
Daniel Bryan: It's great the main belt is on the best character in the company, but a shame that the best character in the company resembles a midget farmer in Burlington, Vermont who sells honey at Farmer's Markets on the weekends than resembling a professional wrestler.
One thing that Hunter really needs to strengthen at the performance centers is character development and being able to go off the cuff with promos. I look at AEW and despite most of the guys who are currently signed to them not being able to ride a roller coaster at Universal Studios, they're entertaining as hell because they know how to tell a story or have a great character.
